Hurricane Frances

I know that hurricanes have been talked about recently but I thought I would start a post as I didnt realize that Frances was this bad. I called my parents tonight and they filled me in on the details since they get the Florida news. They said that their news is saying that this could possibly be the worst hurricane to hit the States. Its so large that right now, it would span from the Keys to Georgia.

My parents have been staying on Merritt Island to housesit, as you all know. They are leaving in the morning since they are under mandatory evacuation again. They are being told to be out by 2 PM since they are predicting it will hit land where they are staying. They are gonna follow their close friends on the evvacuation, who live on Merritt Island as well. Her husband is bed ridden and doesnt travel well at all. So my parents are gonna follow them as far as they can and then head to Mississippi for my sister's. The cat they are keeping will be joining the neighbors on their evac since they will have to come back to Florida. My parents were leaving in a week anyhow to spend some time with my sister and then come back home (here) for the winter. So they wont be returning and Dad is afraid there wont be much to come back to anyhow. Everyone in the retirement trailer park are definitely leaving this time. The news said that their area is expecting 18 foot surges!

So for those that are in Florida or who have family there...my thoughts are with you. If you have family, please call them to see what their plans are. Im sure this will greatly effect several states, so I will keep you in my thoughts as well. I plan to be watching alot of the weather in the next few days.

I've pretty much tried to remain quiet and calm while all this banter was happening but frankly I'm tired of it.

The level of immaturity that has appeared on this board of late is discusting. Forte and Astri, you are behaving worse than spoiled children...honestly, how old are you? It's getting rather pathetic.

And to clarify a point made earlier, Astri, I live in Canada and have been hearing ALL DAY how this is predicted to be the worst storm to hit the Florida coast.

Both of you, have a little compassion for those individuals who are not used to dealing with such extreme measures. It's a sad state that laughs at others misfortunes and inexperience.

Grow up for heavens sake.

Hi Shawna,

I'm glad your parents made it out. I've been lurking the last few days (life is crazy right now). It looks like quite a storm!

Remember after September 11th how the economy really started to go into a downspin? Remember how airlines had problems because people weren't travelling?

But, I just want to point out that the anti-tourist sentiments on this board are nonsense. Tourism keeps the economy of our nation running. If people stopped travelling and we would all suffer greatly. So, I say tourism is great and so are the tourists. Sure, they can be annoying when you're the local, but we've all been a tourist at one point or another.

My sister works at Disney World and has been threatened by these storms, but I've kept quiet about it. She's safe and even though she's not native born floridian she's smart enough to keep herself out of harm's way.

"Here's hoping the hurricane takes Erin's path."

Excuse me? Are you referring to hurricane Erin?

CNN said Kennedy has been evacuated, FYI. Not really sure what your point is about that particular location. It's an enormous storm and it's going to cause a lot of damage, even if it's not as strong as others in recent memory.

I've personally been in two torandos, one of which ripped the roof off of our house. I still feel nervous when I see the sky turn that particular green color or when the tornado sirens are sounded (especially now that I have a baby). I don't think it's silly to be worried about the hurricane, even if you're a lifelong local.

And really, what is the big deal if Shawna shares her worries here? It's not like she personally has the power to spark a widespread panic. We don't have *that* many lurkers on this board. ;)

Have a nice afternoon, Astri. I'm glad the weather is holding out where you are.

It's still childish behaviour regardless of what 'level' storm it is.

Cheers

Actually, the first person who stressed the SERIOUS and DIRE nature of this little storm you've got blowing through Florida was none other than Forte:

Are you proud of yourselves yet?

If Hurricane Frances makes landfall in Florida (and all the models show it will) it would be the worst double strike hurricane on a state in at least a century.

So you respond, in advance of that hurricane, by taking this opportunity to attack the state of Florida and all Floridians.

I started the thread, to suggest posters take an opportunity to walk to their polls to vote in Primaries (of whatever state, for whatever candidates and issues). Exercising one's right to vote, after all, burns calories (this is a 100 lbs board), and it's important to fulfill civic duty. As another civic duty (or opportunity), I also said that in Florida (and likely your states too) there was an emergency blood drive taking place at the polls yesterday. I suggested this would be a good way to **help** people who could really need blood right now, or who would need it in the next few days(and yes, that includes Florida victims of the coming hurricane Frances, and the past hurricane Charlie, as well as tropical storm hermine, etc which devastated W. VA a couple days ago).

I hope there **really and truly IS ** a God, and that ** each of you** posting these slams at Florida get to explain that to Him. That brand of meanness doesn't start overnight, and as Lucy Ricardo (a good comedian) use to say...." you got some 'spla'nin to do."

And I hope the newbies reading our board did have a chance to get out there and vote, and maybe give blood too, yesterday. Both are important exercise, and part of being good Americans.

In the meantime, as we await the inevitable, FLORIDA LOCALS, please STAY SAFE. My prayers and positive thoughts are with my fellow ***FLORIDIANS*** who live here in Florida right now.

Forte

******

And of course, after Forte admonished all of us for posting harmless (and funny jokes) about how stupid Florida voters are, the national media started running stories on how millions of people were evacuating parts of Florida, and how big the storm was going to be, and on and on. I read those stories WAAAAY out here in the Northwest. In fact, I bet a simple search on LexisNexis could pull up stories corroborating Shawna's earlier warning.

So you can CALM DOWN now and LET IT GO. It sucks being wrong, but if you're 42 years old, surely you've gotten over the childish need to be right all the time.
