is good news for Florida! We have no property damage, and we're doing just great!!

Astri, how about you? And hippolytes, kinja I haven't seen you here in a while (of course, I may have missed posts) but if you're Floridians I hope you fared as well.

So today is opportunity day here. To burn some of those calories. First thing this morning, we took a long long walk, against the wind, along our beautiful Gulf of Mexico to give thanks. And now, for the near future, and maybe the far future, opportunities abound to just get in there, roll up our sleeves and help our fellow Floridians by pitching in where needed.

Let me know how it went Astri, because I know you're down this way! I'm hoping you have a similar report, and are out there enjoying your Tuesday.

CNN interviewed someone in the affected area who rode out this storm, and Charlie. He told the reporter, Well, when mother nature rocks my world and my house twice in three weeks, well I begin to take it personal!" You betcha.

Hi Forte,

Great news! So glad you weathered the storm. I'm glad to hear you're in one of the areas that didn't see much. We live on the Gulf, but not Florida, so it's a perpetual wait-and-see and I didn't even turn on the television today so I have no idea where Ivan is at the moment. Historically, though, storms that come from that angle don't hit Florida and so for you I hope that's the case.I think Florida has seen it's share of storms for one season!

I wouldn't be concerned if we don't hear from Astri today. With the electrical problems in some areas, it may take a while. And she may not come online even if she has power, if she's near any affected areas. Conserving the resources down in Central and South Florida.

Say, how's the baby and your daughter doing? Any word when that beautiful Claudia (see, I remembered the baby's name) can come home? I hope soon. But after the storms have long fled the region of course.

Take care. It's so good to know you're fine. Yes, I think I'll join you and burn calories by putting myself to good use in the relief efforts. In fact, I'm calling our local red cross and seeing if I can volunteer for anything, maybe loading a truck or something. if not that, I'll take your tip from earlier and check with my own community center and see what they have going down that way and what I can do to help.

You take care! And Astri, let us know soon! Continued good fortune to you, Forte.I think that situation with the last storm and your daughter delivering the baby, losing her house, was quite enough for your family to bear. And my heart goes out to you.

Hi Forte, Hippolytes et al,

Yes, I'm here and doing fine. And yes, I'm a fellow Floridian. We didn't have any damage either, though I think I gained 3-5 lbs anticipating 3 storms in a row now, with a possible 4th on it's way. The ocean is kicking, and the clouds dark, but I've only seen a slight sprinkle and it's been windy all day. I stayed inside yesterday, figuring I'd leave the roads open for emergency vehicles traveling from Florida and other states to make it south and do their jobs. But today it's heavy going south (homeowners returning in that direction) but virtually empty otherwise. And so, I took advantage of the opportunity to drive to the beach and take a very long walk and talk to the ocean about not accepting any other unwelcome visitors, especially not one named Ivan into the Florida coastline. And then I had a lovely grouper sandwich at a favorite place which has been tied up with tourists until this time. It's nice, for a change, to drive without the traffic.

So not to worry, I'm back to paying attention to my diet and health. Hurricanes are no excuse to get fat, and so the 2hr walk against the wind along the seashore should have helped. Forte I especially like your suggestions about "rolling up sleeves" and pitching in, and I'm also doing that today. This morning I dropped off money at Wal-Mart and Home Depot (they are taking trucks down) and bought extra groceries to drop off at Publix (they are taking trucks down too)and then, even before brushing my teeth this morning, what-the-heck I got out the riding mower and blew our street clean of pine needles (one less thing for the city to do) and helped a neighbor --who should have trimmed his trees and the limbs wouldn't be in his yard in the first place--gru gru) to clean up the mess the storm brought him.

But I think so much of it is commonsense, as you and Astri have said. We prepare for the worst, and hope for the best, and don't catastrophize. Good insurance, and some good old fashioned preparedness, and we'll do fine. I did, I'm happy to report. And happy to hear you did also.

Now girl, let's get out there and BURN THOSE CALORIES!!!

Your buddie here,

kinja RULES ;)
