Worst pot of coffee ever!

Since Im not smoking, I have taken up to drinking coffee or lattes from Starbucks. But Im not saving any money from the quitting smoking if Im hitting up Starbucks once or twice a day to get a cup of joe. So I remembered that my MIL had bought a coffee pot and left it here for when she visits us...I decided to make a pot of coffee this morning. I planned to make enough for 4 cups (just in case) and when it was done...I took my first sip and it tasted like gasoline or something LOL It was STRONG!!!!!!! The directions on the can said that one rounded TB equaled 6 oz of brewed coffee. So I figured 4 cups of 6-8 oz coffee (filled water to the 4 cups line on the pot) would need about 4-5 TB of coffee....TOO STRONG!

So any coffee advice from you pros? I need CoffeeBean....she was like the Coffee Goddess!

Hey...whatever happened to CoffeeBean? I haven't seen her in ages! Sorry that I don't have any coffee advice for you, Shawna. I don't drink coffee. Maybe you can experiment until you get it right? Of course you might be going through a lot of coffee doing it that way lol.

Linda, Linda, Linda....you don't drink coffee...sigh...

Furry and I are very into coffee, and here is what I do.

Shawna - First, what kind of coffee are you using? If it canned crap like Maxwell House, toss it and get soething in a bag, like Starbucks, and some supermarkets sell it in bins that you can buy by the pound. Cheaper canned coffees tend to be dry and bitter.

How old is the coffee maker? Does it need cleaning? Are you using paper filters?

Tell you what, chuck it, buy a new one at walMart and get a gold-plated filter for it instead of paperfilters. A gold filter is $4 or $5 bucks, and they are worth it. They let the natural coffee oils come into the brewed coffee instread of being partially absorbed by a paper filter.

Get a bean grinder, or if that is impractical, buy ground coffee, or do it at the store.

Don't over grind your beans. it can burn them. Pick beans that are oily, smell good, and not overly sour.

We have a coffee maker, bean grinder and gold filter, and buy whole bean Starbucks. Together, the maker, filter and grinder cost us less than $40 to get, and I go thru a pound of coffee in two weeks, sometimes faster..So it is more practical to make at home. The two of us would spend $40 a WEEK at Dunkies.

You sound like the super anal coffee queen...but then again, CoffeeBean doesnt seem to be around anymore and I bet she could give you a run for your money lol

Seriously, the maker is probably two years old and I have a pretty red one that I want on my Amazon wish list. I might get it soon but not right now. I also buy the bagged coffee from Starbucks and have a grinder since I have a Krups cappiccino machine. I would just make lattes since I like those better but Im missing a piece for my machine.

But this morning I just used a paper filter and some coffee in the can that she had left here from a few weeks ago when she was here visiting (MIL).

That was not coffee you made - that was piss-poor excuse for coffee.

Now real coffee can only be made from real coffee beans ground fresh just before you make the coffee. I buy my beans at Caribou Coffee (I love Costa Rica). Keep your unground beans in the frig in a freezer bag so they stay fresh and clear.

A coffee bean grinder is like $6 at Walmart. New coffee pot is a must. Replace your coffee maker like every year or so ---- I buy cheap one so no problem. They work just as well as expensive ones.

Use a real filter not paper filters.

Right after you make your coffee pour it into a sealed caraffe - coffee left in oxygen will become bitter very quickly.

It was amusing this past weekend during my doctorate classes, on of my fellow students brought in her coffee maker and I brought in beans and grinder.

Coffee making is an art - it takes a seasoned hand or a professional. Good thing is that you can quickly become a seasoned hand with the right stuff and a little practice.

I fill mine to the 10 cup line in the morning and I use 3.5-4 scoops (my coffee scoop was .98 at Walmart, it's 1/8 cup).

A good grinder is important - a cheap one will give you rocks and dust.

All this coffee talk makes me think about how sweet Andre is when it comes to making coffee for me. One of his favourite things to do for me is get my coffee maker ready for the morning. I have one that you program to start in the morning so that your coffee is ready when you get out of bed. Andre loves to get my coffee ready for me in the morning simply because he loves the way it smells. He doesn't drink coffee, but he adores the scent of it. He's got the most sensitive nose any human being can have, too LOL! Sometimes he even makes my coffee for me before I even get out of bed! And sometimes when we drive by a Tim Horton's, he urges me to get a coffee just so that he can smell it! He's adorable! ~Sabrina
