The most inspirational story I know of is one of my my best buddies, Christina from back home in WY. Her and I were always the "fat girls" in high school. She has had hypothyroidism since she was very young (I think we were still in grade school) so the weight gain and mood swings did nothing for her self-esteem. When we got into high school she kind of did the opposite thing I did. Instead of brushing the comments off, standing up for herself, and eventually getting the majority of people to realize how beautiful she truley is (inside and out!...she's beautiful...let me tell ya!) she suppressed everything and became a bitter outcast, which only made her situation worse. Nothing I did could bring her out of her funk. She was probably the smartest girl I knew, but didn't focus...she skipped school and fell in with a group of people who treated her horribly. She pushed me away.

By the time we graduated, her and I were neck and neck as far as weight was concerned. She was like 270 at 5'2", I think I was 260...265...there abouts at 6'0". I moved to Omaha, and she stayed in the tiny town we're from in WY. Her mood became progressively dark and she started taking drugs, drinking a lot, and finally started fooling around with the suicide idea. Her weight was nearly 400lbs. On August 5th, 2002 (my b-day) I got a call from her mom. Christy had gone on a binge drinking spree and had popped countless yellow-jackets and took off in her mom's car. They found her 2 days later in the middle of a pasture, tangled in some barbed wire and nearly dead.

When Christy woke up, I was there. We talked. She cried and told me everything that her "friends" had done to her (using her body to buy drugs...for instance). We cried for hours and I stayed with her until she was released 4 days later. She could have died, and she knew that. A higher power had spared her for a reason, and she wasn't going to mess it up again.

She went to rehab, started attending 12 step programs (including OA - Overeaters Anonymous) and started eating right. She is now at 215 last time I talked to her. She still has some weight to lose but she dropped 180 lbs in a little over 2 years and is still losing. She feels great, she has a steady job and a new, great, supportive, wonderful b/f. Christy is my inspiration. She has been through so much I don't even want to imagine, yet she is successful and brilliant and just as beautiful as always.

Here's to you Christy,

Looking in the mirror with love and affection is the best success story.
