at least i know i'm not asking this question of a bunch of skinny chicks who are trying to lose 10lbs - i'm asking it of other people who know that you realistically can't go for a daily jog when you're significantly overweight! we all know that most people's knees/ankles just can't take that! so anyway, i've got my "diet" figured out...now on to the exercise! so what are some exercises some of you all have had success with? i don't have the resources for a membership to a gym or for expensive equipment, which seems to be my bigger problem. i'd love to join, like, curves or something, but i really don't think i'd be able to come up with the cash for it in the long term (well, as long as just my dh is working, and not me...and if i'm working, i don't know as i'd have time for curves, since i'm also taking classes 2 days a week).

so, um, thanx in advance!

Anna Rae, I would look into Walk Away The Pounds by Leslie Sansone. Its a very good workout whether you are overweight or of healthy weight.

Hi Anna~Rae,

For myself,I have a set of stairs in my home that I will go up and down a few times per day.I also have some tapes that I workout to...Walk away the pounds, yoga, pilates(yoga and pilates have some moves that I couldn't do at all when I first started, can somewhat do now,but hope to be able to do all of them when I am done),and I try to get out and walk when I can.I've never been able to jog or run even at my lowest weight...so I don't even try that.

Some cheap equiptment....hand weights, those big stretchy bands, exercise ball, and so forth.I've collected some of those over the years and while some of them don't get used as often as they should...none have gone to waste. And they're cheap!I can't afford a gym membership either~Shrug~So the next best thing is finding smaller things for home.

Hope that helps a bit :o)

Almost forgot...even though I personally think they're kind of cheesy(I do own them though and have used them),Sweatin to the oldies are good tapes. There are men and women of all sizes and they can all do the moves. So something to look into if you like oldies and don't mind Richard Simmons.

Hey Anna~Rae,

I'm fortunate enough to be able to walk to work everyday - it's 30 minutes each way but because I'm in my work clothes it's not too strenuous of a walk. But I do try to make up for that on the weekends. There is a lovely trail in behind my house with a HUGE hill that I walk Saturdays and Sundays.

I've also started taking belly dancing classes - which I love! I started out with a dvd by Veena & Neena that was really good and prompted me to join the class - it's loads of fun.

There was a suggestion earlier about purchasing an exercise ball, hand weights, elastic bands, etc. Just to let you know, I LOVE my exercise ball. I keep it in my living room so when I'm watching the tele I can do some crunches, balancing while I do weights, and it's great to do push-ups on.

Good luck finding a fitness routine that fits your needs. I hope some of my suggestions help!

Cheers

Belly dancing eh? I may have to check it out :o) I like to throw fun things in so it's not so boring and doesn't seem like exercise.Where did you get the tape from?

My son is taking Tae kwon do and I watched him Friday...oh boy did he work up a sweat, along with everyone else.If only I could afford the whole family to go.Looked fun!

I ordered the dvd from Amazon. There are a ton of them there by Veena & Neena (they danced at Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston's wedding) so it was tough to decide where to start. I bought the "Slim Down" one and it really didn't feel like a workout but dang your arms and abs are tired after!

I've read that some people suggest starting with the basics of belly dancing tape and that might be a good idea (there were a few moves I would have liked some idea on form, etc first). But once you get into it it's a ton of fun.

I'm also looking into joining a boxing class in January. Like you I enjoy workouts that don't feel like you're working out. The great thing about belly dancing though is that it's all women of varying shapes, sizes and ages. It is a laugh!

Cheers

Hi Anna Rae!!

I started out with the Walk Away The Pounds tapes. I bought the set of 3 that came with the stretchy band. Started at Level 1 and after doing it for a few weeks moved up to level 2. Sadly, I'm still at level 2.... one day I'll get to level 3. Oh, and these tapes are great for winter when you're a wuss like me and can't get out and walk in -10 degree weather!!

Another idea...See what tapes/dvd's are available at your local library. I dont' have the $$ to join clubs either so I make due with what I can. I've recently been checking out videos from my library. That way I can take 'em for a test drive before buying. I hate buying them and then finding out I can't DO them. Last week I did Latin dancing and Richard Simmons (which I surprising thought was rather difficult..hmm). This week belly dancing and...Richard Simmons (a different, hopefully not so jazzed up one).

Just my suggestions!! Good luck with whatever you decide!!

: )

While I agree with you that she could go for walks, I don't understand this stuff about the hurricanes/FL. What do hurricanes have to do with her wanting to get some exercise?

You seem to be rather obsessed with hurricanes. I'm sorry if you live in FL, or MS, LA, GA or any of the other places hit by hurricanes lately (and certainly don't forget Haiti, among other islands... Haiti being the worst hit yet) and have been adversely affected, but this is a weight-loss support board, not a hurricane support board.

Gremlin huh? Fitting..

Tell me, why don't you do something besides come here and critcize people. This is a support board for weight loss...NOT hurricane victims. Everyone can and will do something within their means to help those who need help.

Tell me also, what did you do for the 9/11 victims, the Russian victims who were just held hostage and killed, the victims in Iraq, the many OTHER victims in this world? People are dying and hurting all over this WORLD, not just Florida! What are you doing for them? Or are you just the poster child for Florida?

Ladies, I don't want to come off uncaring. I too have family in Florida. Even family in the Carribean right now. But I can't drop everything as some would like and go running to help. We will do what we can, when we can.

Do NOT come here to bash the members of this board. It is very unbecoming of you! Not to mention downright RUDE!

I mean, Gosh, just do something besides being mean for YOUR own self-absorbtion.
