I am new here, and I am here because I thought I would get some support from others like me. I am 31 years old, am a compulsive overeater and have been since the age of 12 or13, and I am 5'3 and weigh 255 as of today. I have lost 5 lbs in the last week, and I started out wanting to lose half of my weight which would take me to 130 lbs(in which I never have been since I was probably 12or 13 years old). I went to fitday.com first to put in my starting weight, 8 days ago, and I need to lose over a lb a week for 2 years to accomplish my goal. I have decided to not be too drastic about my new healthy eating lifestyle and do a few things differently. I started walking last week, and walked for about 2 hours overall. I consider it also private time with my daughter, so that will be an added bonus. As for the food I want to try the wait til I am hungry(ala geneen roth) and more veggies, fruits, and soup and light food(ala low fat diet) less meat, less white stuff(carbs) more fibery and salad stuff. I lost 35 lbs about 2 years ago, but haven't gotten back to my all time high weight which was 266 lbs, so I am happy about that, but I am 25 lbs in the hole from my post diet weight, which was 231 lbs, and a size 18/20. I am now a 20/22/24 depending on the manufacturer. I live in a great place for weight loss, I have a lake 4 streets from me north, and a park with a 1/2 mile(it is marked) walking/jogging path 1 street south of me, but have only walked there once with my daughter, for one half mile about a month ago, and I have been here for 4 months, since around june. I would love to find someone in my area to walk with me when my daughter is in school. I would love to find one or more penpals to exchange journals with, and for extra motivation. I would love some advice on how to utilize this website and the message boards also, because I am new here. Hope I didn't bore anyone.

Hello there and welcome to the boards! Your walking areas sound wonderful! Im about to leash up the dogs and take them walking up and down our street but its not near as nice as your surroundings sound. Congrats on getting a good start! You can stick with this...try not to look at the long term numbers. So set small goals, celebrate the changes you are making now and keep on trucking. You mentioned Geneen Roth....Im not familiar with that name though. Mind sharing some information on her?

Welcome to the boards! Your plan sounds like a good one. That's basically what I've been doing since the beginning of the year. I lost about 37 but lately I've been kind of stuck. I guess I need to get my motivation back lol. Anyways, welcome aboard!

Hi Bratsus and welcome to the board!

Looks like you and I are doing similar 'plans' (if you dare to call them that). I've been making small changes in my lifestyle like walking back and forth to work, eating less sugar, trying to buy mostly organic, elliminating processed foods, incorporating more fibre, etc. Perhaps the most important change for me is no eating 3 hours before I go to bed (it can lead to some VERY late nights but I do aim for no eating after 7:00 p.m.).

If you're just getting into walking I would recommend buying a pedometre - I'm addicted to mine. For the first four or five days you wear it following your normal daily average. Then, to lose weight, aim to increase that average by 2,000 more steps until you reach 10,000 steps a day. Some days (like today) I can go as high as 18,000 steps but other days it can be a struggle - but it keeps me going.

Hope you enjoy this site - it's helped me get down over two inches in just over two months (that's with a few a slip-ups). Most of the women here are not only supportive, friendly and hilarious but also very inspirational.

Cheers!

Hi Bratsus,

I am new here also. My name is Liz and I live in Michigan. We are about the same weight and in the same boat. As of 9-22-04, I weighed 262 lbs. at Ladies Express Workout (a place like Curves wear you workout for 1 minute on 24 or more things (stairs, padded platform, or tons of different kinds of gym equipment) and I am 5'9" tall. I am 38 years old and the mother to 4 children (1, 6, 8, and 16). I also had two pregnancy losses (miscarriage in 2001 and full-term stillbirth on my delivery day in 2002). The stress of those two losses, plus the stress last year while I was pregnant with my last were almost more than I could bear and they took their toll on me physically. I was never heavy until I first got pregnant 17 years ago. My weight ballooned to 290 lbs. by the time my 1st child was 2. I was able to get down to 209 lbs. on my own through diet, exercise, and being diagnosed and treated for low-thyroid. Everything was fine until I became pregnant again in 1995 - within 8 years I was pregnant 5 times and never fully had a chance to recover from each pregnancy before I was pregnant again. Don't get me wrong, I wanted all the children I have, I just never knew what a toll it takes on your body. Men definitely have the easier end of things!!!! So, here I am. I was 246 lbs. 2 weeks after my youngest was born last September and now that I've started back to work and am rushing all the time (I also attend college part-time in the evenings - I'll finally graduate this fall after attending for more than 6 years). So, I, like you, need a nudge in the right direction. My thyroid continues to be out of whack. It has been ever since a year ago when I gave birth. The doctors continue to try and get it regulated, but they and I have known that with each pregnancy my thyroid functions less and less, so it may take another 6 months before that is under control. I, too, love the white carby stuff. I just went shopping last night and picked up a bunch of healthy stuff to keep here at work (low-fat cottage cheese, fat free yogurt, fruit, celery, tomatoes, low-carb tortillas, fat free cheese slices, low-sugar oatmeal, and turkey slices). Hopefully eating these instead of my usual fare (chocolate, peanut butter, and carbs, carbs, carbs) will help me). I've lost the weight in the past, I just don't understand why it's not coming off now. Since 9-22 when I started the fitness place I have gone three times each week for at least a half hour to work out and since January I do a one-mile walk of the pounds video tape with 3 other women at work. I was hoping that would be enough, but apparently it is not and I will have to find some time to add more workouts in. Any suggestions? Well, I've gone on and on, sorry about that. I was just very excited to see another new person on these posts. I hope you respond back.
