Erin (Oonagh): Feta, tofu, hummus
| Sat, 11-06-2004 - 6:34pm |
I just went back and read in those journal posts and I saw your messages to me about feta, hummus and tofu.

personally I find firm tofu to be absolutely disgusting. Try soft tofu or "silken" and use a very flavourful sauce. Tofu is meant to be eaten with a sauce, not plain.
feta, crumble over a salad of romaine, add some kalamata olives, and a dressing of lemon juice, olive oil and oregano...

Feta is good on a salad, that's where I'd try it for a first time feta adventure. Most greek salads have feta. I don't think it tastes like a blue cheese but it does have a distinctive "wang." I really like it. Just talking about it makes me crave it!
Like the other poster said (sorry I forgot who it was!) tofu really isn't that great alone . Tofu is just soybean curd, so it doesn't have much flavor alone. It comes in a bunch of different textures but soft and firm are the most common. I definitely believe you could have had a bad tofu experience because sometimes it's just not done well. But, I actually prefer it as firm as I can get it. I'll post a "recipe" for tofu stirfry that's really easy , it might be a good starting point for trying it. A few years ago one of my friends had a "tofu party." He'd never had it, and most of my friends use it, so we all had to bring a tofu-dish. It was fun.
Hummus is chickpeas (garbanzo beans) pureed with olive oil, salt, garlic, usually a smidge of lemon juice and whatever other spices people like to toss in. Athenos is a common store bought brand, I really like their spicy red pepper hummus. It makes eating veggies a lot easier (and it's way healthier than light ranch dressing).
It's too bad we can't have an unusual foods party!

This post is funny for me, because I have been putting these weird foods in my journal every day. I love hummus, feta (!!!), sundried tomatoes, lalala. Glad you are testing out the weird foods Shawna... did you like hummus? Lots of these foods you have to get accustomed to because they have very strong flavours.
And tofu I really had a hard time getting used to, at first my mother would sneak crumbled tofu into our spaghetti sauce while going on and on about how healthy soy is for you, and then when I went to San Francisco my friends took me to the best restaurant where I had long thin slices of tofu in a light batter in a stir fry, and it tasted great. And poof, I liked it.
I never used to like mushrooms... it was a texture thing. But now I like grilled portobello mushrooms and when I was in Norway we went hiking and picked them in the forests, and had fresh mushroom soup that I really liked.
Has anyone tried Eggplant dip? (sometimes called Melanzana). It is roasted eggplants, and you just use the inside white part, and mix with garlic and olive oil and salt for a really buttery dip that is DIVINE.
Have fun trying new stuff...

I love hummus - ground up chickpeas (garbanzo beans)with garlic, olive oil...There are so many sub-flavors, like 40 Spices, roasted red pepper, garlic... I will make sandwich on whole grain bread, slap on some hummus (insted of mayo - AAACK!), lettuce, turkey, red onion, sprouts, cheeses..OH MY GOD IT'S SO GOOD.
I would rather eat a dead cat than eat tofu, unless it's in Chinese Hot & Sour soup. And goddess knows I've tried to get past the texture...but...
Falafel. Couscous. Curry powder. Chipotle (roasted smoked jalapenos). Kalamari (squid).
Chevre and Boursin cheeses. Brie cheese. STILTON cheese with ripe Bosc pear slices. Kalamata olives, oil cured olives, feta cheese....Thai peanut sauce. Nori seaweed rolls for sushi. SUSHI ! Wasabe (it's got to incinerate your brain or it is not worth it). Raw oysters. I need to stop now....
I love food.
Amy
but its still high in sodium even if you buy it crumbled
You can also get cow's milk feta if you are weirded out by the goat's milk thing.
Kristin, I think I've had the eggplant thing you were describing, but I've seen it called Baba Ganoush.
Cous cous is really good, Shawna! The name is weird, but it's just little round granules of pasta. I really like the garlic and parmesan kinds they sell in the store. You can make it fat free and it's pretty substantial. I really like it with Chik Patties (soy chicken, as long as we're talking about strange foods we like).
I'm also a big sushi person-but vegetarian only! I love most soy products. Soy cheese, soy milk, veggie burgers, fake chicken, and of course tofu.
