Learn to take your heart rate when you exercise. At the peak of your workout, use your index and middle fingers to find your carotid pulse at your neck. Time 10 seconds on a clock/watch and count the beats. Then multiply by 6 to get your heart rate in beats per minute.

Then, take 220 and subtract your age. (eg. 20 year old 220-20=200) That is your MAXIMUM heart rate. The heart rate that you recorded while exercising should be about 60-80% of that maximum. If it is lower, then you are not working hard enough, if it is over, then you have to take things a bit slower. On a scale of 1-10, you should be working at about a 6 or a 7.

You can't go by how sweaty you are to judge how hard you are working. I hardly ever sweat, because my gym is cold. Heart rate is much more accurate.
