I'm curious about that too... I have an exercise bottle from Curves that I take there with me every morning. I rinse it out before I put new water in it in the morning, but I only wash it maybe once a week. Its scary that even the one washed in the dishwasher had some bacteria, really makes you wonder if any of your dishes get clean.
I guess it makes sense since when you drink you "backwash" some back into the bottle (yuck).
I can't believe some woman used the same one for 3 months w/o cleaning it. GAG! I had heard that the plastic from Poland Spring type bottles would leach certain chemicals into the water if you refilled them too many times.
I guess if your water isn't hot enough in your house, using the dishwasher wouldn't disinfect it very well, either.
In any case, I'm totally grossed out. Guess my water budget just got bigger!
Well, anything plastic that's used over and over (I mean the "thin" plastic, not real tupperware) is going to get pitted and start grabbing onto bacteria and not let it go. So if you have a cheap plastic cup/bottle then yeah, it'll hold bacteria too, not just the water bottles you get at the store.
The tupperware thing is why I won't use those new-fangled "gladware" and the like... if you reuse them, it's going to be the same problem. Heavier plastics used for tupperware(tm) and those like it will take longer to get pitted and bacteria-laden.
