Hello everyone, I'm a newcomer to the board and boy do I need some help!! First let me give you some bio. I'm 40, work a full-time job (with an 1 1/2 hour commute each way!!), have a hubby and 2 kids to care for, and I need to lose 150 pounds!! The older I get the harder it is to lose weight. I am so overworked, overtired and overstressed that the thought of dieting is just overwhelming and exercise, I do good just to make it home before I collapse. I have been reading a lot of the posts from the board and some of them have been so inspirational. I will be eternally grateful for any advice.

Hi, welcome to the boards...

I think the best advice is to just make small changes in your diet and increase your exercise in small amounts, drink more water, and you will soon have more energy. The board will help you with your questions and give you support.

There are some challenges you can join to motivate us through the holidays... check out those posts!

I feel your pain. I've got 2 little ones and a husband in addition to a full time job and exercise oftentimes gets chunked out the window for housecleaning and "me" time. I've got a cool treadmill.....makes a wonderful clothes hanger. What about playing sports with your kids? That's been my main source of exercise and they love the "mommy" time we get together. Even if it's just on weekends, it's a start.

You're right, I do need to make time for myself. I think I'm going to tell my family that I am on strike this weekend!! I do need to plan my meals, I do better when I have a general idea of what I will be eating everyday. My husband is really very supportive and I know he will do what he can to help. You know another thing that is pretty overwhelming is all of the different diets out now: Atkins, South Beach, Fat Flush, low carb, low fat, etc. It is really confusing. Does anyone have experience with any of the latest diets? Did any really work or is good old fashioned calorie counting the best way to go?

Water, water, water. I know how important it is, but I have to admit I am very lazy when it comes to drinking enough during the day. I start out the day with great intentions, and then I just lose it somewhere along the way. I promise to try harder. Thanks for the advice!!

Hi and welcome! I can relate to the long commute and trying to find time to fit in exercise. And my commute is only about half what yours is! One of the things I try and do 3 or 4 times a week (weather permitting) is going for a walk at lunchtime. At first it was just a 10 minute walk around the building, then I gradually increased it and now I try and do 30 minutes. I use the other 30 minutes of my lunch hour to eat my lunch. Of course, as the weather gets colder that becomes a problem, but even in the winter I try and get out when I can. I also try to take the stairs as much as possible. We have a parking garage here at work, and I always park on the third floor so I can do the stairs. It's great, too because everyone is fighting for parking spaces on the first two floors and I practically have the third floor to myself! Anyways, those are a few suggestions that I have. I hope that you can work some of them into your day.

I'm glad you joined us :)
