I posted (everywhere!) about my poem being published next year.

Katy,

I'm sure you meant well by your post....but the tone was a little extreme. For someone just starting out in writing, any recognition is wonderful motivation. Even if it is a message board on iVillage, it means alot to someone just beginning their writing journey.

I'm glad you write and are published for a living, but I'm sure things didn't just fall in your lap.

Please try to be a little bit more supportive by remembering your "early years" in publishing.

I also thought it very rude of how you talked to Mary.

I didn't say I posted it on the board.

Katy (Forte),
Actually what you posted is incorrect. All scientific journals require a fee to cover publication costs, generally in the range of $50-100 per page. All publications that require a fee are not vanity press.

Now, you're never going to make a living writing if you must pay to get published, but it can be a stepping stone to paid pubs later on.

From someone else who publishes as a part of her professional career.

I really was trying to help you. But all I can say now, is take their word for it a little bit more when you receive a paycheck for it. If you are not offered money for your work, then you are not published in any real way. If you read ivillage TOS of service though, you will see that once you "publish" (in the sense of post) your work to the website it then becomes the property of ivillage...in that sense, you've lost it. So in the future, if you ever want to publish the poem for money, you can't because you've given it away for free to this company. That's something to think about, if you really think your work is good enough for genuine publication sometime in the future. These sorts of places, boards, are good if you merely want to bounce your ideas off others and don't plan on keeping rights to your work. But once you've posted it, you've lost it. And don't take my word for it: read TOS and see for yourself.

Good luck in your writing endeavors.

You know what song I have in my mind right now?

"The cat came back, the very next day. The cat came back, we thought she was a goner, but the cat came back, she just couldn't stay awaaaay!"

Anyway, Mary, I seriously doubt that ivillage would ever pursue their intellectual property rights to something you posted on a board here. There are millions of ivillage boards, many intended for the sharing of writing works in progress. If she scared you, check it out and ask some questions. The truth is that she's trying to rile you up and scare you, not help you.

Lots of authors get started small. So what if this particular opportunity wasn't quite what you thought it was? It doesn't mean a bloody thing about the quality of your writing or its potential to get published elsewhere.
