What do you do when you are starving
| Wed, 12-08-2004 - 5:05pm |
and you're trying so hard to stay on a diet but you get so hungry you just know how good a bacon cheeseburger and fries would taste and it just feels so haaarrrd not to go get that or a big pizza or whatever? What do you do to psyche yourself into staying with the diet or stave off the hunger?
TIA from a lurker who will probably be joining in more frequently as I really need to do something to get myself back on the healthy eating and exercise path.

Hello Silvermist :)
Despite that fact that I too am not doing so hot at the moment, here's what I think... The biggest key is to not let yourself get to the point of starving. Keep lots of healthy snacks around and eat something every 2-3 hours. If you wait too long and let yourself get too hungry it makes it soooo much easier to give in to that pizza or cheeseburger. If you're not totally starving and feeling deprived at the next mealtime its easier to make the right choices. Another thing is that if your eating plan isn't giving you enough calories or isn't flexible enough to allow some snacking or whatever then you need to find something different that will actually work for you. No diet is worth starving over, that's no way to live!

I have a pretty easy time staying on track at work...I guess b/c I stay really busy. But around 430PM I start getting hungry. I usually run to a convenience store and get a Special K bar and a diet coke. That helps stave off hunger and keeps me from inhaling the contents of my refrigerator and cupboard when I come home. Then when I get home I can make some healthier choices.
I guess if I was really smart, I would buy a box of those bars and keep them in my car!
I usally eat some protien....like a small piece. I usually get about 1/2 an ounce of cheese that does it for me. I have tried slices of cucumber and that sometimes does the trick. But I am on a low carb - low fat +/- diet. (Doing it my way)
Anyway, Good Luck...I am interested in seeing what others do.
