Looking For Suggestions & Support
| Sun, 01-09-2005 - 10:30pm |
I am new here. I really don't even know what I am doing. All I know is that I found this place and it seems really nice and supportive, so I joined.
I need to lose weight and I do not know how. I am looking for some suggestions like what works for you. I need to lose about 165 lbs. I can't believe this. I eat because of my emotions a lot (happy or sad). I have tried the Atkins diet numerous times but could never stick to it. I also always say "I will start Monday" and that never happens.
I have looked at Weight Watchers but I'm really not sure.
Just looking for some input on good diet solutions and support.

Hi Mandarin!
First of all welcome and congrats on taking some steps towards your weight loss journey.
This is a pretty supportive group, you will find lots of input and good advice here.
Shawna (Picklepuss) and I are Weight Watchers girls so if you have any questions I am sure either us might be able to help you. She was very sucessful at WW. I am still on my journey !
Atkins wouldn't work for me, I am just a carb lover and I found it too restrictive for someone like myself, I travel a lot for work and at the time I tried it there were not a lot of options out there.
Weight Watchers has two plans at the moment. You should look into them they are both pretty easy to follow.
Welcome! Enjoy and post often!

Hi and welcome!
I feel your pain, girl! I know exactly what you are going through. It took me a LONG time to find the "right" diet for me, something I can stick to. I THINK I found it, but it's only Day 5... LOL. I am semi-following the Zone diet. It is based on a balance of carbs, protein, and fat. (40/30/30 ratio). While I won't get into details here, I like it because I'm not depriving myself of one food group which I love (carbs). I did Atkins for about 6 weeks, and then I couldn't take it anymore!
But before you find the right diet, I think you have to work on your emotional issues, and why you are overeating. I'm not an emotional eater. I just LOVE to eat! Combine that with NO EXERCISE, and you see why I'm at 288 lbs. I stepped on the scale last week for the first time in a few months and saw 290. That was my motivation right there. I said to myself, "This has to stop." You will reach that point, and you will be ready to do whatever you need to do to change.
Please take your time and find the best plan for you. Read a few books, or get advice from the other members of the board. Once you begin, stay here for support because as far as I can see, this is a great place to be!
Hello there and welcome to the boards!
Welcome to the board! You'll find lots of wonderful people here with a lot of great advice and support! I started my new lifestyle back in mid-October, and have lost almost 30lbs so far. Actually, I did hit the 30# mark, but gained a few back over the holidays. Oh well! For me, the biggest thing was just being READY to lose the weight. I had been complaining about it for years and always telling myself that I would start on Monday, but it never happened until one day I woke up just totally disgusted with myself and my lifestyle. It was the right time for me, if that makes any sense. I immediately cut out ALL soft drinks and sugary drinks; ONLY water and unsweetened tea. I'm also focusing on portion control and calorie control. I also walk on the treadmill a couple of times a week and will be adding weight training as soon as I can get my courage up. I also drink a lot of water, close to 3 liters a day now. IMHO, fad diets don't work. This has to be a total lifestyle change, you can't expect to go back to your old habits once the weight is gone. Fitday.com is a great site for helping you count calories and keep track of what you're eating and how much exercise you're getting.
Best of luck to you! You can do this!

This is so true Aggie! It's like hitting rock bottom. I am at rock bottom. If I don't do something now, I will just keep gaining and gaining. I see that now. Before, I could eat whatever and not lose but NOT GAIN either. Now, I'm up 20 pounds in like 5 months! I said to myself, NOW IS THE TIME. Everyone has to reach that point before they can be successful.
Hi and Welcome, It sounds like you already have some great advice, but I will try to add a little. For me I have to have a plan of some kind. I am doing sugarbusters which has worked for me in the past. It is a good carb rather than low carb type diet. Each week I have to make a menu of everything I am eating including all meals or snacks. If I don't then it is too easy for me to grab something bad when I am hungry. Weight Watchers is also good because you will have the support of meetings and some guide of what to eat. You could also go to the library and look at several diet books and see what they suggest. Many of them have 2 week meal plans that are a great way to get you started. Just be careful to stay away from fad diets that promise you will lose a lot of weight quickly. 1-2 pounds a week is considered healthy and more likely to stay off in the long run. You may find in the beginning you lose quickly but after several weeks it should balance out to just a few pounds a week. Another thing that works well is to write everything down you eat and drink. That way if you are not losing weight you can look back over it and see where you are going on. I know it also can help keep me honest by not sneaking in a few bites of cake etc.
I hope this is helpful and let us know if you have any more questions.
