Treadmill woes

Hi there!
My sister and I just joined a gym, and have been very diligently going to the gym every morning for about an hour...30 minutes on the treadmill, and then 30-45 strength training. (woohoo!)
The weight-lifting is going great, but the half-hour on the treadmill is causing me quite a bit of pain in my shins after about ten minutes. I don't know if it's shin splints or not, but it's been pretty discouraging. My shoes are fairly new, and I try to maintain a reasonable speed for my fitness level.
Any ideas??
Heather

Hi Heather,
COngrats on joining the gym! It sounds to me like you may be suffering from shin splints. It is not fun! Maybe you should warm up a bit on the treadmill and then stretch out, then jump back on. Make sure you stretch after too. Also remember to take it slow. Especially if you are just getting back into a routine. You won't be doing yourself any favors if you do too much and end up injured and couch bound. I have made that mistake before. Have you tried an elliptical machine? I suffer from some knee pain (geez, I wonder why) and I find that the elliptical is much less stressful on my joints. I really love it because I can run and get a good sweat without bearing much weight down. Let me know if you give it a try.

Heather,
One other idea. Do 15 mins on the treadmill get off
