water and Atkins diet

I am 32 years old. I am 5'7 and weigh 376. Down from 384 on the first of this month. I am on the Atkins diet. My doctor put me on it because of my sugar. I find that I like this diet except for one thing. I am always thirsty. Does anyone know why this is? I drink about 120 oz of water a day. Is this too much? not enough? Can anyone enlighten me? Also, is anyone else out there doing Atkins? What kind of results are you getting? Hope to hear from you. Tammy

Sounds like you are doing great. How long have you been on the diet? You should try to drink 1/2 of your body weight in ounces, so about 180 oz. right now. Do you think you can handle another 60 oz a day? I know it sounds like a ton! I have to drink about 110 oz and i dont know how i do it! I feel like every 5 minutes I am gulping down water. But if you are very thirsty, it means you may already be dehydrated, which means you need more water. I am no pro on atkins, and have no idea on if it relates to that or not. But I know when I was researching water intake, the advice was, dont wait until you are thirsty, because by that time you are already dehydrated. Try drinking a little more water if you can, and maybe call your nurse or doctor and ask them for any help or advice. I know you will get tons of wonderful advice right here on the board!
You said that your Dr. put you on Atkins because of your sugars. Have you been tested for diabetes recently. One of the big signs is thirst. It seems to me that 120 Oz is a lot to still be thirsty. If it doesn't get better then I would call the nurse.
Welcome and Congrats on the weight loss so far. It sounds like you are doing a great job. sharla
When I did the Atkins diet, I was constantly thirsty, too. I couldn't stop drinking water! I was drinking over 250 oz. of water every day...I have quit Atkins because my body was not fond of it, but I wouldn't be too worried about the excess water consumption...check with your medical professional, but I think it has something to do with the diet.

Hey! Tamara....I have to ditto on the diabetes idea....But the only person who really knows this answer is your doctor...you may a blood test for diabetes.
I do a low carb and semi-low fat....went down from 312 to 298 and now I am floating back and forth between 298 and 301. If I did exercise...like I say I will, I could break this platu.
Check with the doctor about the water thing thou....and welcome to the boards...
