Have you ever heard of such a thing?

I went to see my GYN, and he was concerned about my weight (gained 80 pounds in the past year, according to his records), and all during the exam, he kept telling me how I "may not be able to lose the weight". I inquired why that would be since I have done it three seperate times in my life (3 times losing over 100+ pounds), and in between those times, I've been trying to lose weight, but often do fail after about a 10-20 pound loss. He nodded his head and said, "See what I mean? It might not be up to you anymore. You might have to have surgery". Then he gave me the card for a Bariatric Surgeon in the same building that he is in and kept saying, "PROMISE ME you will go talk to him. PROMISE ME!". I told him I couldn't do that because I'm very fearful of having this type of surgery and I still do believe I can do this on my own. I told him it was just going to take time to get the weight off again. He looked at me sternly and said, "You may not HAVE time". I asked him if there was some reason why he was pushing for this...did he see something on my tests or in my vital signs that would lead him to believe that I'm on death's door if I don't have surgery, and he said No. That he was just convinced that I could not lose this weight on my own and that I would have to have surgery to lose it.
Has anyone been told such a thing? He more or less told me that although I appear to be in good health, I'm going to die without surgery. It kind of motivated me more to lose the weight on my own...just to prove him wrong! LOL!

That's absolutely outrageous.
Get a new doctor....FAST. any doctor who would use scare tactics to get you to go to a surgeon is UNETHICAL....unless he could prove you ABSOLUTELY needed the surgery.
Given you history of losing, I 'd say you can do it.

Sounds like a buddy system to me. He may not be taking a cut in patient referrals but I believe doctors do practice this kind of thing.
I would see another doctor in case he was telling you the truth about HAVING TO LOSE WEIGHT NOW! He may be trying to make sure he is not sued. Have you checked his name with the medical community? He may be currently be in litagation or you could see how many times he has been sued....
