Hello, I am new here and so glad I found kindred spirits. :) My name is Amber. I have more than 200 pounds to lose but I am concentrating right now on the first 75 so I can get under 300. It's a hard journey. I have a question for you, to weigh or not to weigh? My husband doesn't think I should weigh myself because I tend to get discouraged when I don't make progress BUT I think I am making progress and feel like I will continue to do so and would like to know how I am doing. SHould I weigh? I don't have a scale right now and only know what I weigh because of a recent trip to the doctor....

Any suggestions and tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Amber

Welcome Amber

I am new here myself... I lurk more than I post.... but really working hard on that.

As for weighing.... Well I get crazy about the scales..I will weigh myself to death..

If I am loosing its great... But when I stop loosing for a day or two I get all depressed and that's when I will be more likely to cheat. So this time I decided to not weight. Well for as long as I can hold out. I also like to measure myself. I love to see the progress in the inches..

Keep posting

Welcome amber,
It goes both ways. Some people weigh often and others never look at the scale. I personally do better when I weigh often.(although I get obsessive and weigh several times a day) It motivates me if I am losing and I can tell if I am doing something wrong. Just remember to expect stalls in your weight loss that is normal. Don't put everything into what the scale says. It is not uncommon to go up and down the scale several times a week. Instead use several different ways to measure your success like body measurements, how your clothes fit, and how you feel. Good luck. I look forward to getting to know you better. sharla

Thanks for responding. When we were going to weight watchers would get all upset if I didn't lose any weight and I just think he doesn't want to go through that again... So... I don't know what to do. I am curious to know if all my hard work is paying off at all or what.

Thanks for the suggestions about measuring myself and such. I think I will just do that for now...

I have been going to the gym and working out with a trainer for the last few weeks. She has me on a 1500 calorie a day diet and it's tough to stick with but so far so good.... The main problem is feeling un self concious enough to go to the gym when I am not working out with her... I am embarrassed because of my size and it's hard because I feel like people are staring. None of my friends want to go. I just need to get a new attitude. :)

Hi Amber :) I'm glad you found the forums. I started my weightloss journey last October at 370 pounds. I'm now down to 340 or so, so I know almost exactly where you're at. It is a hard journey but completely worth it.

At first I didn't weigh in for a long time. I knew my weight from June last year and I didn't weigh in until December when I had a doctors appointment. I also don't have a scale, and I planned on my next "weigh in" being July on my birthday. Nearly 8 months waiting! I've changed it a bit due to a special someone visiting in April, but I still mainly keep off the scale.

I do it because I think it helps me focus on the important successes - eating healthier, getting in the habit of working out, clothes getting baggier, me feeling greater... rather than focusing on numbers. There are so many factors that screw up the numbers - like water weight, bloating, different times of the day, muscle, etc.

I say work on a goal of getting your exercise to become a habit, or eating healthy, or getting all your water you want.. do it until you're confident you've been doing awesome, confident you're losing weight.. feeling it in your body - then weigh. But, this only works for some people. Some people need the constant reminder that those numbers can change at the end of the week or so to keep their arse in gear. Play around and try what is best for you, but don't forget that in the end what really matters is how you feel.

*hugs* good luck!
