Weight became a problem for me back in middle school when I turned to food when I got sad and depressed. I am 20 yrs old, between 5'6 and 5'7 and I weigh around 250 pds I believe, it has been a while since I been on a scale.

I am also a college student, so some eating is not in my control, I guess I came here for support, since none of my friends really understand how hard it is to look in the mirror and want to cry...

I know exactly how you feel. I have always been overweight and sometimes it seems like you can't go on. I'm so glad you are facing this problem now, though. I am 32 years old, 5'7 and weigh 365. I would give anything to be your weight right now. Don't let yourself get out of control like I was for so many years. Face this problem now and even if you never lose a pound, don't let yourself gain any more. I didn't just put on this weight overnight. I've gained about 10 pounds for every year I have been married. It came on so slowly that I didn't pay much attention to a pound or two here and there, but believe me, it adds up. I wish I knew at your age, what I know now. I would never have let myself get over 200lbs. Now its practically impossible to get it off because exercising is so hard for me. You still have your whole life ahead of you. I wish you the best of luck and if you need any advice, I will help all I can. Tammy

Hey,

I'm Jade and I'm right there with ya. I'm a senior in college now, 5'7, and though I started at 246, I'm down to about 233 right now. I know that in the dorms here we weren't "allowed" to have hot plates, foremans, etc. However, you have to start hitting that salad bar--which can sometimes be about as appetizing as watching paint dry...esp with your friends eating pizza right in front of you. Here's a thought though. Start hitting the gym. I'm sure there is probably one thats free to go to on campus..we have like 3...and in the winter months, my roommates and I do exercise videos. My personal favorite: cardio hip hop/cardio kick. It's a really fun way to learn cheoreography and burn some calories.

It's often hard to make so many drastic changes at once so start slowly. Limit going out to eat for fast food down to once a week. Work out at least 2-3 times a week and drink eight glasses of water a day. Even doing small things, like drinking diet pop--preferably caffeine free, except during finals--can really be a help. If you ever need to talk, feel free to IM me on AIM...it's the same as my handle here. Good Luck!

Hi, and welcome. This is a great place to find support. When I was in school I lost a lot of weight by walking to my classes instead of driving. There wasn't much parking and it was great exercise. They also had a free gym and lots of exercise classes. We also had a wellness center that provided nutritional help. You might see if you all have one. Jade is right, hit the salad bar. It is hard, but you can make healthy choices. Do you have a mircrowave in the lounge or your room. Make use of it even if you have to eat frozen dinners etc. We had a kitchen we could use down the hall and I had a mini fridge in the room. You can lose weight while you are in school, you just have to be a little creative. Instead of the Freshman fifteen(senior 30 whatever) you will have lost fifteen. good luck and let us know how you can help. sharla

Yeah I live in a dorm and I have a mircofrige in my room and there is a kitchen down staries that we can cook in.

I have changed some things about my eating that started last semester. I started drinking less soda and having junk food in my room. Last semester I drank no soda except during finals. But I mainly drink water and green tea. I snack on gradnola bars, fruits and veggies. But I know when I am out eating I need to change more besides how much I am eating.

Also we do have 2 gyms on campus and I know I need to go to one and have been trying to figure out how to work it into my schedule and all. Sometimes on saturdays we all would go place raquet ball.

I think the hardest thing is having my friends and family not really supporting me or understanding me. All my friends are kind of skinny or well are skinny. None are like me and they do not understand how my weight can get me upset at times. They just do not understand.
