TOTAL NEWBIE IN NEED OF ENDLESS SUPPORT
| Sun, 03-13-2005 - 7:15pm |
Hey guys, my name is Steph. I've been thinking about dieting for the longest time, but have never had any motivation from anyone to continue on with it. I weigh in at about 230, and according to my BMI I need to lose about 100 pounds or a little more.
I have NO idea where to begin. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. I will give you my support in return.
Love.

Hi steph and welcome. This is a very supportive group of ladies. One of the most important things you can do is to start exercising if you aren't already doing so. That has helped me a lot with my weight loss. I personally try to only eat whole grains,no sugar, and lots of fruits and veggies. I keep track of my fat and calories at fitday.com. That has helped me a lot. I am sure the others will also have some great suggestions to help you get started. Good luck and let us know how it is going.

hello Steph and welcome to the boards!
Hi Steph and welcome to the board.
Well the fact that you're hear shows that you're ready to take the next step.
As for what to do next...well...go see your doctor. She/he should be able to help guide you along the right path.
Then...get moving. Walk, join a gym, do an exercise video...anything. Just get going. Exercise has been the key thing for me.
I don't really follow a plan other than the Canada Food Guide, so I try to keep it balanced and healthy (I also try to eat all organic and avoid processed foods). Water is also a big thing for me; drink as much as you can get in.
Finally, come here often! The amount of support I've found here has been incredible.
Hope to see you around!
Cheers
Lisa
Hello Steph,
I am a newbie here also. I have joined Weight Watchers but I wanted an extra level of support. My hours at work have changed recently so much that I am not able to talk to my friends much but I can get on the internet at night or when we are slow at work.
I agree about eating organics whenever you can and staying as far away as processed foods as possible. This is actually why I did not join WW before, because I thought they would just push their TV dinners and other products. I was really surprised about their "Core Plan" though which actually says you can eat what you want of a whole list of good for you, nutrition packed foods that are nutritious and help burn fat. I find that organics flat out taste better than its counterpart. We have a couple of health food grocery stores that I can get these at, but now I am trying to find as much as I can in the regular stores. I can find organic milk, fruits and vegetables almost anywhere I shop.
I have let myself get so out of shape that it is hard to get everything going at once so I am taking it in stages. I started by just finding that source of accountability. That is where the WW comes in for me. I told only a couple of close friends who have similar goals and were looking for support. I didnt tell everyone because I tend to get a lot of advise that is well intentioned but is not inline with my beliefs or flatout wrong. Sometimes people are real pushy about it too. I swear, if another person tells me to eat low carb icecream instead of a nothing but fruit smoothie, I will go off on them!
Since eating healthier for a little while, my energy has increased. I began with smaller workouts just a couple times a week, but working on more days. By the way, that is because of my personal activity level. I have a totally sedentary job and home life, so I had to take it a bit slower. The key really is to always do more that you did before. Each week or even each day I am stepping up my activity and healthy lifestyle.
It is a really good idea also to check other areas in your life for balance. Look at the activities you do, the people you hang out with, the job you work at etc. Even more han the others, what are the thoughts you have of yourself? If you don't like yourself then you may not treat yourself the way you deserve or require others to either.
Good health encompasses a lot more than just food, water and exercise.

Hello friends,
I have been that way so many times in my life. I know this time wil be different though. I pretty much hit rock bottom. I am as big as it is safe for me to get and it is not safe for me to stay here. I also have goals as far as getting married and looking good in my dress and wedding pictures as well as felling good on my honeymoon and playing with my children that I will have one day. My back was against the wall so I had to do something. I dont believe in the gastic bypass or diet pills. They may be the answer for some, but not for me. I also dont believe in fad diets. It is good old fashioned wholesome foods, regular exercise, emotional and mental balance, healthy relationships and healthy spiritual life. It really all works together.
You can do it. Accountability is a key part of success. I have an accountability partner as well as the WW where I weigh in each week. I'm going to do it this time because I have to do it, for myself and for the family I am believing to have.

Hey Mood x4!
You've come to a great place to get support or understanding.
I have been on a lot of diets and have not succeded. Because I think I was not ready. I am ready now. My back is also to the wall.
With that being said...there is a key to losing weight. Here it is....and it is the only key, Short of surgery.
1. Check with your doctor and get a support group like a WW meeting or/and use even US!
2. Portion Control...Start small...like a smoker you are addicted to food. If you eat a hugh amount of food daily you need to just tapper off little at a time. I ate 2 truck driver plates, then one plate; then 3/4 plate; then 1/2 a plate; now I am working on 1/2 of a 1/2. This is the amount of food that ww's allows me to eat. I now get full on the portions that they suggest. Stomachs do shrink.
3. Drink plenty of water. Some say 1/2 your weight in ounces....some say x number of glasses a day. Ask your doctor what is right for you. If I remember correctly water will wash out the fats you've just injested and get rid of other wastes in your body. (somebody correct me if I am wrong.)
4. Exercise....start with 10 minutes a day if that is all you can do. Walk, just do something.
5. East Smart...organic veggies are the best to buy, if you can afford them. After that it is the fresh produce at your groceries. Eat lean meats and follow what ever diet you plan to do.
6. Hints....ask us about hints and techniques you can do to get you over the hump of eating the old way you use to.
And remember WE ALL HAVE A CHEAT DAY. Don't punish your self if you fall off your wagon. Just get up, dust yourself off, and climb back on!
Love Havin you here
