Losing weight after anti-depressants
| Wed, 04-27-2005 - 1:46pm |
I just recently stopped (with medical permission) taking Lexapro for depression. This is the second time I've been on anti-depressants and both times I have gained a considerable amount of weight while on the medication. I'm finding, though, that the weight I put on while on anti-depressants is particulalry hard to take off. I'm excercising and eating right but the scales aren't budging.
So my questions are:
1 - Have any of you had similar happenings?
2 - Does the weight eventually come off?
3- Why do anti-depressants make people gain weight?
Thanks for your input!

Well, I haven't had the experience of weight gain on anti-depressants/ weight loss after, but I have had a similar experience with hormonal birth control. I know that I gained a lot of weight while on the birth control because it seemed to turn off my ability to stop eating. It took me quite a while after going off to get myself on track with losing weight, but it did eventually come off. Then it came back when I got back on hormonal birth control. This time around, I'm losing the weight while on it, and this is my second try at losing weight on it. At first I stalled and lost nothing over the course of 3 weeks. This time around, I've lost 17.5 lbs in the first 3 weeks. My advice to you would be to come up with a good routine and stick with it very well, especially at first. I do calorie counting, but some people like Weight Watchers, South Beach, etc. I would also do my measurements in addition to the weight so that you can measure non scale changes. Good luck, and, I'm sure if you stick with it, you will be able to achieve your weight loss.
