What is the deal with coconut oil...I've been hearing that it is good for weight loss, thyroid, etc., but how do you use it?

Well, I went to google and typed in "coconut oil" + "weight loss" and it came up with quite a few pages. I hate to say it, but it sounds like another fad ("fat") diet. From what I read, people take about 4 tablespoons of it plain a day. Ewww. They say it reduces cravings for carbs/protein/etc. I'm sure that's true since fat tends to keep you fuller a lot longer than carbs, and since the oil is pure fat...I personally don't know anyone who would be up to swallowing 4 T of any kind of pure oil daily. Shoot, that alone is almost 500 calories, so I don't see how it would be all that beneficial if you didn't significantly reduce calories otherwise. The only way I can see it being useful is to those who are always hungry and consume large amounts of carbs, but I combat the always hungry problem with black bean burritos. Black beans, 2% reduced fat cheese and a tortilla with salsa, 260 calories and keeps me full for hours! Much tastier than a tablespoon of oil and lots of fiber to boot! Maybe you could try adding healthy oils and fats (think olive oil, avocado, etc) to your foods if you aren't getting enough fats to keep you full--I usually get right at the recommended 30% daily (sometimes a bit more, but I get pretty low carb). Shoot, I read one of the "success" stories of one of the ladies and she said she lost 16lbs!...in 8 months. That's only .5 lbs a week! Let us know how it works if you decide to try it though, it would be neat to hear first hand stories!

No, I don't want to try another "fad" diet, I was just curios.
