Running?

Has anyone ever considered running? Do any of you run now? I am seriously considering trying to make a goal to start running 2 - 3 times a weak, but at this point, can barely run a quarter mile without getting out of breath or having painful cramps. I understand it's something you build up to, but just wondering if anyone is working toward a running goal or is considering doing so.

I'm a treadmill gal who is currently walking 5 miles @ 2.8mph. My goal is to get up to 3mph. My body and age (43yrs) can't handle the physical impact of running until I drop a lot more weight but I would love to be able to have the option. I think your body can let you know if you're ready to kick it up to the next level. Do you feel ready? LK

I started running at the beginning of last week, then had to go out of town for 4 days, so just now got back into it. I started out only being able to run one side of a block and it nearly killed me. Now, I can do about a block, but it still nearly kills me. I've been trying to run every other day and walk every other day, but I couldn't while out of town. I go really slow--Almost at a fast walk, but I make all the motions of running. I have not lost any weight yet--in fact, I've gained 3. But I know that running is why I used to stay so skinny when I was younger, so I am trying to keep to it. Also, if I run in the mornings, I feel like a million bucks all day. Its very energizing. I think you should GO FOR IT!

I would love to but I am scared to try. I don't want to be the"fat girl" at the gym who can only run a minute or two. Right now I do 3.8 mph on the treadmill. If I were to go up to 4 it would be running so I am almost there. They say the best way is to work up for it. Start out walking 2 or 3 minutes and then run for 1-2 minutes. Go back and forth between the two. Each day try to increase the time you run. Good luck and let me know how it goes. maybe one day I will give it a try.

Well, I hate running. Bores the heck out of me! However, my dh runs. He said to try walking some/running some. Get into your brisk walking pace and then set a goal, say a tree down the street, and jog to it..... then walk some more. Then set another goal and jog to it. Keep doing this during your usual walk. Gradually increase the distance you run and the frequency with your endurance.

Hope this helps!

I'd love to try running, but I think I'd like to first get under 200lbs.(less stress on the poor knees at a lower weight :o)) and then chat up my Dr. and see what he thinks.I have problems breathing after strenuous exercise,so I keep to walking and low impact.Would love to be able to get into it though.

I think I agree with the stress it puts on the legs weighing so much. I have seen much larger women than I out there running though, so I'm not sure. I did some looking around online last night and found this article to be the one that looked like it made the most sense...in case anyone is interested:

Actually, I have weak ankles too, and I really run like an old milk cow, but I've come to discover that running really is the best thing I can do....doesn't take a whole lot of coordination, it's good for the heart and great for weight loss...at one point my doctor told me that it would strengthen my ankles...but of course I didn't listen. LOL

I just started running about a month ago. I usually do it 2 times a week. When i first started, I couldnt go even half of a quarter mile w/o huffing and puffing....Now, I can go about a quarter and then some....It takes time to build up.

I will be really honest with you guys.....I am afraid to run....I weigh 300 pounds and fallen down many, many times. And it hurts so bad. I just can't begin to describe to you the pain...I even afraid to walk in some place where uneven ground may be or where there is tiled flooring etc..
