I am about 150# pounds overweight. I get terrible pains in my back when walking and even after sitting for a long time. I have been thinking about having the gastric bypass surgery but am unsure if I want to do something that drastic but how am I suppose to get the weight off when it hurts me so bad to do anything about it.? Andrea

First off, hi there and welcome to the board! My name is Staci, and I started with 105 lbs to lose to reach goal. I currently have 90 more lbs to go, and sometimes it seems like it will never happen. I actually just got back OP today, and I can't tell you how many times lately I've thought about how nice it would be to have bariatric surgery and make it "easier". I have seen the success of three people on it, and, although I know that there are risks and hardships with the surgery, I also know that if I had something like that to prevent me from overeating, I already have the foundation for a healthy lifestyle and could lose all of my extra weight so easily. But, I also want to have kids, and a lot of the surgeries would make it difficult for that, and I really don't have the money or the time off from work to get it done, but I do know what it's like to think about it and sometimes think life would be so much easier with it.
That being said, I'm so sorry that you have so much pain due to your excess weight. I think that if you just change your eating habits and really follow whichever program you choose very well, you should be able to lose a lot of the weight without having to exercise, and then after you lose a good amount, you could add the exercise in. I easily lost 2 lbs per week by eating a very healthy, low calorie diet and not exercising--I was able to lose 50 lbs in 3 1/2 months this way. Unfortunatly, I didn't stick to my healthy eating, and I didn't exercise, so I gained it all back. But, maybe if you do this and get those first 25 or 50 lbs off, it will make life less painful and you can get into an exercise routine. Also, maybe you could try water aerobics as a form of exercise to increase your strength without putting too much pressure on your back/joints.
Good luck on your journey and keep us updated!

Welcome to the board Andrea! I agree with Staci. Maybe try changing your eating habits and see if any of that weight will come off in order to make it more comfortable for you to at least walk.
That being said, I understand how you feel and it seems like you might be a good cadidate for Gastric Bypass. I suggest talking with your doctor and getting advice from them. They might even suggest an eating plan for you. Because you know, even with gastric bypass people do stay obese if they don't change their eating.
I hope to see you around often!
