Anyone ever made their own canned goods?

I was wanting to try my hand at canning some homemade soups and chilis and stuff, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with home canning and how hard it was. I went to the Ball website, and their step by step guide didn't seem too hard, except for the fact that I don't have a special pot to use for boiling the jars, and I don't really want to have to buy one. It would be great to be able to can my own stuff because that way I won't have to worry about always having to refrigerate my foods, and I can make more in bulk and waste less. If anyone has any experience or tips, they would be greatly appreciated. Also, is it okay to use can foods with meat? I make this tomato soup with diced chicken in it, and would love to be able to can it.
Thanks for your help!

I've never canned, although I've thought about it. There are some really great books available on canning. In fact, our local hardware store, several months ago, had a beginner's canning set. It had a book of tips, recipes and instructions, a small pot, tongs to lift the jars and a couple of jars w/lids. You might look for something like that.

Walmart had a canning kit over the winter holiday season,it was for jelly, but it was a start.I still wish I had gotten it,because I'd really like to get into that.I'm not sure about meat products, but I've seen recipes for cakes and numerous different items that looked interesting...now if only I could remember where I saw it :o/
Check around ivillage.I thought at one time they had a board for that.

My Mom and Grandma can stuff every summer. They can spaghetti sauce, green beans, pinto beans, salsa, and I'm sure other things that I can't think of.
It's been years since I've helped them, but I don't think they use a pot to boil their cans in. I think after they are cleaned and dried, they turn the oven on a low setting and set them in there to warm up. I could be mistaken on this, but it's an idea that you might want to see if you can find more about.
Also, if you'd like to see their recipes for the things they can, let me know and I'll see about getting them emailed to me.
Hope this helps!
