Gastric Bypass diet? OK...

My mom recently had gastric bypass and has been on a liquid and puree diet and will be for a few months. in just over a week she has lost 10 lbs. would it be ok if I did this as well? she is only allowed 4oz at a time and has to wait 45 min between "meals", she must drink 62oz of water every day and drink at least 2 protine shakes. along with a good multi-vitamin, would this be ok for me? I walk 2 miles every day during work and go to the gym every day after work for 1-2 hours doing either an aerobics class weights and the bike or the eliptical, weights and the bike. would this still be healthy?

My initial reaction would be absolutely not!! I don't think you would get enough calories to support your exercise program for one thing. I also don't think you would get enough fiber. She has to eat that way because of the surgery and it's under carefully supervised conditions. So without a doctor's okay, I would no, don't do this!

I'd say chat up your Doctor and see what he/she says about it.The only problem I'd see with it would be that your exercising,so would need the extra calories, and you'd be hungry most of the time...something I doubt your Mom is at the moment.Best bet if your Doctor doesn't seem like it's a good idea,is talk to a nutritionist.I'm sure they can give some decent advice as to your activity level and the amount of calories you should be comsuming. And if you do ask,let us know what the Dr.has to say...I'm curious how someone would react to wanting to do the extreme diet without the surgery.

No way should you follow the diet your mother is on. As one of the other posters said, she is on that due to surgery and a very altered digestive system. Without that surgery your body is not designed to take nutrition that way. In a side note, I wish your mother had had the inflated band put around her stomach instead of the bypass. It's very effective and removeable if needed. Kristi :o) <><
