Generally, you shouldn't lose weight while pregnant. The best thing to do is try to minimize your weight gain, like try not to gain 60 lbs...shoot for 30. This is really up to your doctor, tho. Remember, the baby needs the nutrients...and they'll be plenty of time to lose after the baby is born.

Congrats and good luck.

Best bet...ask your doctor if you can talk to a nutritionist and go from there. That way you can ask how many calories are needed to maintain a healthy pregnancy and yet not gain to much.I have a friend who did just that and loved both her Dr. and her nutritionist for it.She did gain, but not much and lost it all after the baby was born in a very short amount of time.Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Well, keep in mind that when you are pregnant, your body only needs about 300-500 calories more than normal - and that means more than you normally would NEED to stay healthy. For many of us here, we're in the habit of eating way more than we actually need, and that is how we gained the weight - so I'm thinking you'd probably be safe to look at a calorie range that is healthy for you, plus the little extra, and you might still lose a little weight (or at least not gain much). (I've heard that one good formula for normal calorie intake is your ideal weight times 12-15, depending on activity level) The thing that we often here about how we "must" gain weight when we are pregnant...my obstetrician said it is NOT true for someone already significantly overweight. I actually lost about 30 pounds during my last pregnancy due to hyperemesis gravidarum (Extreme "morning sickness"). NOT that I'm recommending that as a diet plan, LOL! But I was so worried about the effect on the baby, and my excellent specialist assured me that the baby would get what it needed from me, and that I'd be the only one to suffer if I couldn't keep any food down at all. For a couple of months, I don't think I consumed ANY real food - just had rehydration treatments - and my baby was over 8 pounds and perfectly healthy. Just be sensible, and make sure that every calorie counts - what you DO eat should be as nutritious as possible.

Please check with your doctor first before changing anything in your diet.
My cousin was worried that she would gain a lot in her pregnancy (she is overweight, not normal or skinny). So she didn't eat much and the result was a very small baby (less than 4 lbs). She had other complications during the pregnancy, and eventually she changed doctors. After the new doctor knew what she was eating (and the fact that she only gained 6 lbs in 8 months), he was furious. As I already said, she had other complications, but the doctor said that the poor food choices aggravated things even more.

The same doctor advised me to eat less. And he put me on a healthy diet (which I did not follow and ended up gaining 70lbs). My cousin was ordered not to excercise, while I had a complete fitness program (walking, stretching, abs & thighs excercise, etc). So in order to be safe, I think you should talk to your doctor first. Everybody is different.

Have a healthy pregnancy.

obviously she should check with her doctor, but please note that my point was NOT that she should "diet" - just that she can eat a safe, normal range for her body. For most of us who are overweight and routinely eating too much, just eating the "proper" amount of calories should still result in a healthier pregnancy, and a lot less weight gain. What your cousin did was clearly dangerous and irresponsible, and I want to be very clear that I'm not recommending dieting! But the original poster did say that she couldn't get to her doctor just yet, so I was passing on what mine told me. Although - as far as your cousin goes, I am somewhat surprised, since as I said, I ate next to NO food for much of my pregnancy due to the hyperemesis, and there were no complications. Maybe because I was getting nurition and fluids via IV (occasionally) and she was not. An averge days menu for me was a bowl of Rice Krispies and a glass of orange juice!

I am sorry if it sounded as if I was attacking your post, cuz really I wasn't. I totally agree with you about going "the healthy way". I was only warning about extreme dieting cuz I would hate if anyone had to go through what my cousin went through. And yes she wasn't on IV (cuz she wasn't throwing up or anything, she was just not eating).
Again, apologies if my post wasn't clear.

I didn't feel attacked, Mary! I just wanted to make sure that my own post was clear, and not like I was trying to come across as some self proclaimed "expert" on weight loss during pregnancy. Sorry I didn't catch this post earlier - I just noticed it today!

Here is a lil history on myself.. I tend to have bp through the roof.. I finally now got it down to 138/68 normally its 180/90 on a good day.. With Trey i was borderline pre-eclampsic and have major water issues..With both my pregnancies i ate whatever whenever I wanted not counting or looking what I was shoving in my mouth.. Till my insurance cards come IM stuck between a rock and a hard place on visiting the doctor.. The doctor I have to go to is the one that I went to with Katie and hes not very personable and really didnt have the raport i had with Treys doctor..But he's not an option since he dont take our insurance.. Im trying to keep to around 1500-1800 of healthy non fat foods.. I do eat occaional fat food but not like i did.. I tray to eat more veggies and fruits and really Im stuffed and dont want to force anymore down my throat.. Im not trying to get skinny and know eventually Ill probably gain weight I just want it to be a minimal amount needed for the baby and not mommy.. I gained 50 pounds each time and look where i was with that.. I think possibly my weight had a factor in having to deliver csection but then again he was 9-9.. I will definately talk this over with my doctor when I Nsee him.. And thank you all for the good lucks..Nor did I want to cause a rift here on the board

Congrats on your pregnancy!!!

It's good that you are goingt to get your fruits and veggies in. I also agree with the poster who said that you can eat healthfully and even if you only slightly gain (or lose a little) your baby can be okay. Do check in with you own doctor when you can but I know that mine wanted me to stick to ten to fifteen pounds of gain if that. (reason being that ten to fifteen is what the entire uterus gains in baby, fluid etc so I would have been about the same or slightly less that prepregnancy weight after I delivered)

One specific caution though...

<< Im trying to keep to around 1500-1800 of healthy non fat foods.. I do eat occaional fat food but not like i did.. >>>

Please don't go 'non fat' because the baby needs 'good fats' for appropriate brain tissue development. I don't normally like the "What to expect when you're expecting series because it IMO does a poor job of presenting info about nursing your babies. BUT I really recommend the "What to eat when you are expecting" book that is from the same people. It presents a lot of good info, yummy recipes etc.

Good Luck,
M.
