This is so discouraging! I weighed in at 225 on Sunday morning, and I thought I would weigh myself again this morning since I’ve been exercising and eating well for a week now. So I step on the scale after my morning workout and I’m at 227? WTF? I just started crying right there. I thought I was doing so well and expected to see a pound lost or something, especially with all the water I’ve been drinking (about 80 oz per day). I don’t think its muscle because that’s a short amount of time. I’m not even doing strength training right now. I’m just doing 30 minutes (about 3 miles) on the elliptical. That right there made me want to throw in the towel. I know its early but I hear these stories about people losing 3 lbs in a week from the water weight and got my hopes up…

Don't worry too much! Your week isn't yet up, and you may just step on the scale on Sunday and find that you did in fact lose for the week. Lots of things can make you gain weight, including eating a lot of salt or refined foods. I used to weigh myself every day, even though it's not recommended because some poeple are disappointed if they don't see a loss (the only reason I don't weigh daily now is that I'm don't sleep at home half the nights of the week). I found that this kept me sane, because if I weighed one day, then was up 1 or 2 lbs the next, I knew that it wasn't an actual gain. It helped me keep perspective on everything, because I realized that there really wasn't any possible way to gain that much overnight. I still only tracked my official weight by what I weighed every Wednesday, but seeing the numbers on the scale daily kept me on track. If I did have a bad weigh in one day, I was extra motivated to eat even better and make sure I get in my water. It also made me aware just how much sodium filled foods can affect your body by the fluctuating numbers on the scale.

Don't weigh-in too often if this will discourage you. Only stick to once a week and record that. I ditched my scale all together and now only weigh in at my doctor's. And since you're excercising regularly, why don't you have some measurements taken too? So even if the scale doesn't move but you lose inches, you don't get discouraged.

You're weight will fluctuate a lot during this journey.
The absolute BEST advice I ever got on weighing myself ...weigh every day and then take the AVERAGE for the week. That is because weight fluctuates day by day - so you can see little drops (or spikes) as you did. A little bit of water retention from eating something salty can make a couple pounds difference. The standard advice is only to weigh once a week - but what if THAT day you are weighing a little heavy? Then you walk away feeling like the whole week was a waste! Here's my last two weeks, just so you can see what I mean:
Sun Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri Sat Average:
298.5 296 296.5 297 299 298 298.5 (2083.5/7)= 297.6
297 297.5 295 296 297.5 294 295 (2072/7) = 296
Notice that my weight could change as much as 3.5 pounds from one day to the next!! But looking at the average, I can see that I still lost one and a half pounds last week, so the little ups and downs don't discourage me so much. Imagine if Monday was my weigh in day - I would have actually thought I GAINED a pound and a half! Or if Friday was my weigh in day - I would have been unrealistically thrilled, thinking I'd lost 4 pounds, and then I'd be even MORE discouraged if the number bounced back up again.
