I never understood their point program, so I feel back on an oldie, but a goodie: Calorie Counting. It's too much math with the points alloted and the points you can transfer, then the points you can add from activity, and then trying to remember what a point equals in calories.... I'm slow when it comes to that stuff.
:)
The point system has worked for me until now.
Where do you find the calorie counts?
I just posted a HUGE response on the Calorie Counters post, but I didn't put this info on it :), so I thought I'd post some more :). LOL.
For meat, I find the info on the packaging. Some places STILL don't put that info on their packaging, but most do, and WalMart is a great place to start shopping for meat because all their stuff has the nutrition info. You can also use fitday to look up your favorite meats and write them down or memorize them (I have a great memory, so I can tell you the calorie count of pretty much ANYTHING I would eat, even ice cream and potato chips). If you buy the extra lean cuts of meat (skinless chicken breast, center cut pork chops, sirloin (look for top in the name), or lean stew meat, 93-96% lean ground beef), then these have about 150 - 200 calories per 4 oz uncooked. If you buy the meat by the pound, then divide then # of pounds by 4 to get how many 4 oz servings there are.
My Kaiser doctor said it's all about calories. I think 2424milk.com says the same thing. She joked and said you could eat 1400 calories of twinkies and still lose weight. You'd get sick, but you'd lose weight. She said it's about getting the most out of those calories, which means probably staying away from oily foods with lots of fat. Protein fat is unavoidable, but as long I stay away from processed, I'm supposed to be okay.
She said I do need fat, but I'll get that from meat, avocados, etc. I like peanut butter, myself. But, for a 1500/cal a day diet, only 250 she said should go to fat. I don't keep track, though, because I don't eat processed stuff (too cheap to buy it, really).
Shawna, you're headed back in the right direction and that's awesome.
