re-introducing myself

Hi I am Mikiya I will be 23 on 12/11 and I just came from the doctor. He put me on a no carbohydrate diet that consists of 1600-1800 calories a day. I can have fish, chicken, vegetables and hard cheese and nuts. No fruit, no carbs and no juice or soda. I have to drink at least 64oz of water a day and get at least 1hr of exercise a day, if not more. Why all of a sudden is this so important to him and to me? I weigh at 5'3" 244lbs and my blood pressure is sky high, I can barely get dressed in the morning as it winds me. This time has to be different if I want to finish nursing school or even be alive to see my son start kindergarten.

I have a ton of The Firm tapes so I will be using those in combination with walking hopefully working up to jogging. Can't promise that I ever will break into a run but I want to be able to slowly jog for a whole block....I think if I do this right I will be jogging by my birthday. I also want to be able to finish a whole Firm tape so hopefully by the end of the month I will do that. My doctor wants at least 20lbs gone by Christmas, I say by my birthday. We'll see. I plan to check into this board as I need to lose "at least" 100lbs.

Looking forward to being able to breathe better and getting to know you all.
Mikiya:)

Congrats for committing to this challenge! There are many wonderful ladies on this board! I do have to say, however, I’m surprised your doctor is saying no carbs at all. Carbs are an important fuel source and I’d be very surprised if you are able to work out for an hour without them. Did he give reasoning for that? Basically weight loss comes down to burning more calories than you eat, carbs or not. Obviously I’m not a doctor, but I do not think that it is a way to lose weight long term. Will you lose weight? Of course, but can you do this for the rest of your life? If not, you are going to struggle with keeping the weight off if you start eating carbs again. I’m sorry, but I don’t believe in these fad diets. Eating a healthy, balanced, reduced calorie diet and exercising seem like the most healthy way to go.

Um, a no carb diet isn't actually good for anyone even a diabetic. Please talk to your Dr about this or see if he can refer you to a nutrition class for diabetics.

I'm in agreement with you.My husbands Dr. told him he needed to lose weight, but insisted he see a nutritionist first because everyone was telling my husband about low carb and the Dr.freaked.

I don't know...maybe for a bit it wouldn't be a bad idea...to lose some of the weight quicky in order to better your health, but a no carb/low carb diet really isn't good for a lifestyle change as it can do damage to vital organs.I think what people fail to realize is that most people over indulge and don't eat the right types of foods.Fresh fruits and veggies along with lean meats and healthy grains(which are hard to find with all the refined crap they do to it)are all good choices...in moderation.(now if only I could put that to use in my own life....it's hard!!!)

Ask to see a nutritionist....they should have some great advice and may even make it easier to figure out how much of what you can and can't have.

Hi Mikiya and welcome to the board.

My nutirtionist (who's originally a doctor) put me on low-carb too. I couldn't have any bread, rice, pasta, etc. But I did have plenty of fruit & dairy. I agree that it is not wise to go with this for a long time. With me, it was a kick-start at the beginning and we started to add more carbs slowly. So if this is your case, then there is no need to be alarmed. But if your doctor wants you on this for life, then you should re-consider. Hope this helps.

Good luck!
Mary
