Where do I start...

Where do I start? Any help would be appreciated... I dont know which diet to choose. Should I try low carb? low fat? counting calories? Well i need something to get my metabolizm moving again. I usually only eat once a day at dinner and its usually a full plate. My BMI is 52.9(i checked lastnight) I am 29 yrs old 338lbs. 5ft. 7in. tall. Yep I have 7 kids but I am willing to cook our food seperate from theirs. I have an Atkins cookbook and a light cooking cookbook. Any suggestions? I'm not sure how to start eating again without gaining a lot of weight back. Thanks for any help.....

Hi Theresa,
How about heading to the library and checking out various books on nutrition and healthy eating? That way you can get an idea of various different diets and wont feel so overwhelmed....and some have recipes you can try too, which is always a plus...so you can get an idea if you're going to like the menus.
Another idea that I try to keep to,is when grocery shopping...only shop the outer portion of the store(except for the very few aisles like ketchup, mustard, etc.),basically keeping you to meats, fruits, veggies, dairy, and grains.Substituting higher fat foods for lower may help too.I no longer buy ground beef, instead opt for ground turkey and no one has even noticed...same for sour cream and certain cheeses.

Thanks I'll give it a try. We sub. turkey but my hubby hates it... so I usually brown my groung beef in water to cut down on the greasy fat I also boil our hamburgers. I need to buy more fruit and vegies though. I really love salads. Hmmm... thanks!!

Hey! I'm doing what I think I can maintain after the weight is lost. For me, that's calories, and nothing else. I don't think I would keep eating meat after this for every meal, so Atkins is out. I don't think the point system will be around when I'm 50, so I don't do weight watchers. It's up to you, and what you think you will easily live with once this is all through.
Calorie counting is easy for me because I know it's something I can keep up with later on. If I know I have 2,000 a day, I can tweek it and play around with it once I'm done dieting. I can eat what I want, as long as it's under that cap. I'm also not very good at understanding programs, so it's easy for dummies like me. :)
I have been trying to incorporate milk into my diet. Three times a day, I drink an 8 oz glass (which WW recommends, and so do doctors, anyway), and although I'm not sure if it's working, it's fine with me because I love dairy. They claim you will lose more weight with 24 oz of milk, but who knows: www.2424milk.com.
Well, hope this helps!
I think I'm going to start by counting calories. Looks easy enough. I set up a free account at FitDay.com so we will see if I do it now :) Thanks for the help!!

You have started in the right place. There are a lot of people on this board that were in your shoes and a lot that are in your shoes (like me) here on this board that can give you a lot of advice and support.
As far as diet goes, I'm on Weight Watchers, it works good for me. As far as excerising, start off slow, start walking and then move on from there.
Good luck girl.
I think calorie counting is best for me. We eat alot of hamburger helpers and quick boxed cheap meals!! I'm going to start adding some type of veggie to every meal and do portion control.... although I total bombed lastnight when my hubby treated us to McDonalds... NOOOOOOO!!! I ended up with a double quarted pounder with cheese meal supersized!! I got an ice tea to drink though :) its a start I guess. He also got me a 10pc. nuggets and man were they yelling "eat me" but..... I ate 1 and gave the rest to the baby. So I guess that was a step in the right direction. I am using fitday to track my calories. I also went online to half.com and bought a richard simmons DVD. The 80's one. So this way I can exercise with other people my size :) So I guess we will see.

Hi there! Wow! I cannot imagine being 338lbs! I honestly think that in order to get results you need to cut on everything...With that said, I think that low calorie is the best path for you...I'd start with 2,500cal than as you lose weight you can decrease your calories accordingly until you reach 1,200cal. You also need to exercise, I know it can be hard specially with 7 kids! But I know you can do it!
Good luck,
Leticia
Well on the "Ask Jonny Bowden" board he said 1500 calories is what I should be intaking. I would also like to note that u hurt my feelings in your post. All the people on the board I have talked to have been great until u? Geeze and I was feeling so proud too.

I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings...It really wasn't my intention, I was in a hurry when I wrote that post so maybe I tried to cramp everything into a couple of lines. I was just trying to help since I, myself, have lost some weight in the past (45lbs). I'm only 115lbs so I was just a little taken aback when you said you were 338...My best friend in the world is part of this board and I come on now and then to support her...
