Handling holidays

I know this is a little early for you Americans, but tomorrow is Thanksgiving here, and I'm wondering what everyone else's holiday strategy is? This will be the FIRST time I've been on a diet during a holiday, since in the past I've just always planned to dies "afterwards", LOL. SO---here is what I'm doing, and we'll have to see if it works. We are having ham - crusted with mustard and brown sugar. I would really feel deprived if I passed THAT up, so I'm having some! I'm making candied yams for the family - lots of butter, cinnamon and brown sugar - but I'm just going to boil some yam for myself and mash it up with a bit of low fat sour cream. I truly LIKE that, so it won't feel like a deprivation. Rick's making his famous greenbean/onion/bacon casserole - I've NEVER liked that all that much, so I'll have some microwaved brussels sprouts. As for dessert, I bought Saskatoon berry pie, because I don't like it much... BUT THEN a neighbour dropped off a pumpkin pie! So I may have a little slice of that with some low-fat whipped cream. *sigh* - I have a feeling weigh in won't be too uplifting this week :-)

Hi Happy Thanksgiving I personally also on a lifestyle change I can not go throught thanksgiving without indulging so I say Indulge not over indulge and just work extra hard the rest of the week and you will be fine everyone needs a break. Also eat slowly and savor every bite and it will feel like more and I have been trying to leave some of everything on my plate so that I don't eat to much.

Hmmm... My mom's family is Native American, so I can't relate. We don't celebrate... you know... *ahem*

Christmas will be hard, though. I will handle the holidays by making things I want, but in a healthy way. If anyone offers something to me, I'll have to politely say that I shouldn't. If they insist, then they don't respect my lifestyle change.

Might be abrasive... why not prepare for the day by cutting the calories of your mini-meals all day. Then, when you eat. have 1/3 of the yummy stuff, and leave the rest alone, explaining your diet.

OR -- better yet -- tell everyone that you will eat everything you want on Thanksgiving only, so could they please hold off on the food gifts until then?

You have a ton of options. Don't give in! ;-)

I'm glad you posted this. We don't celebrate thanks giving, but I'm almost starting my own holiday season this year. Next week is our anniversary, then my SIL's engagement party, then my sister's birthday party, then new year, and of course Christmas.. We celebrate Christmas TWICE.

But let's handle one disaster at a time. We're going away for 4 days to celebrate our anniversary. I need major willpower to control myself. I'm allowing myself 1 indulgence meal, but what will I do for the rest of the days??!!! I don't want to gain even 1 pound back. I'm starting to panic already.

Merry, what day is your anniversary? Ours is the 18th! We'll be in Las Vegas and I'm really afraid of gaining.

I suppose moderation is my plan for the rest of the holidays. I will cut back on my meals for the rest of the day and exercise extra. Hopefully that will work!

LOL - did I mention that the ham is crusted in cloves, mustard and brown sugar?! Sorry, but cutting off ALL the fat just isn't going to happen ;-) I have ham TWICE a year, so I'm darned if I'm going to totally skimp. Anyway, I think I'll still be alright. Good luck with your holidays - I get the impression your MIL doesn't exactly cook diet friendly, from what you've said about her recent visit!

Hi Anna.. our anniversary is on the 17th, one day ahead of you. I remember my engagement party was on the 18th a year before. I am going to Alex (on the Mediterranean) starting the 15th. We originally wanted to go to Greece, that's were we spent our honeymoon. But suddenly October is here and we have to reservation. Alex is so similar to Athens, so it was the next logical choice.

Have fun in Las vegas!
