Exercise Question

I never did any strength training before. My weight loss rate started to decrease and I have to add excercise. Cardio is no problem, but while I'm at it, I figured I can also start strength training. That and the scary post about lose skin LOL.

So.. any advice for a beginner? I am not joining a gym, I will do my own home routine, maybe even buy a couple of dumbbells. Does anybody know what should be the workout?

I do the Winsor Pilates series. THe beginner dvd is great, then i progressed to the upper body workout. THese tapes take care of all areas. I made so much progress i cant believe it. I started out not being able to do a sit up with someone holding my feet. Now i can do a sit up with my legs out straight and no one holding my feet. This may not be a big accomplishment for some but i wasnt even able to do that in high school. I LOVE this series. I got them on ebay for really cheap.

I agree with the pp, Winsor pilates is great!! I don't know if you have any back problems, but that is something you do need to be careful with if you do pilates. If you want to try those you can email me and I'll direct you to a place with great info on which ones to start out with! (aandcfischer@yahoo.com)

Another strengthening workout that is AWESOME is Core Secrets. The instructor is Gunnar Peterson and all you need is an exercise ball and some dumbbells. I especially LOVE the Bun Battle, you won't be able to walk right for like 3 days, LOL! The Ab Assault is great too, and then there are like a 20 min and 45 min full body workouts. They are really fun and pretty easy to do, but you will definitely feel it afterwards! I heard he also has a new "off the ball" workout, haven't checked it out yet though.

Thanks for replying everybody.

So I guess I'll go for pilates, but I can't decide on which video to go for. Any suggestions? Also, can you direct me to where to buy it. I need to buy it online from somewhere who ships outside the US.

Thanks again everyone.

Rely, can you please dig out some of those sites for me. From what I've seen, waiting for Pilates can take 1 months or more :(

Thanks

Ebay has a great selection of Pilates for all levels. I usually get most purchases within a week. Just be sure to look at their feedback and buy from a trusted seller with lots of experience and positive feedbacks.

Thanks! I checked and some do ship outside the US. It will take more than a week, more like 15 days, but that's OK. Thanks again

I go to Curves. They use these hydrolic machines that increase in resistance the harder you push. It's circuit training, and they claim it builds muscle. All I know is if you want to increase your metabolic rate, you need muscle. I'm sure anything would work, as long as it's working out your muscle. Do they have Curves where you are? It's women only, and they have people who work there who know a lot about health-related issues.

There are a couple of gyms similar to curves. One of them is women only. But the problem is I don't have time to go to a gym and I know if I subscribe, I will never go. I have access to the university's gym and there are some excellent equipment there. But for the past 7 years, I've only been there 3 times.

And Renee.. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN??? (It's been rather quiet in here lately)
