Howdy! First you need to ask (and answer) yourself some questions: What is my short term weight loss goal? What is my long term weight loss goal? Which diet plan do I want to use? What kind(s) of exercise will I do? Etc.

What REALLY helpful is to truly WANT to lose weight. When you really want to lose weight, you will get in a "zone" and almost nothing will deter you.

After you lose the weight, to keep it off you need to make PERMANENT lifestyle changes. For instance, exercise will be a DAILY activity, like brushing your teeth. Portions will be accurate and consistant. Treats will be limited. Food will be eaten in moderation.

Use these boards to make friends, ask questions, see advice and support and lose the weight! ivillage is a GREAT place to make friends.

Hats off to you! You already have so many positives in you life, loving children, fabulous grandkids, that you can use those to help motivate you on your journey. The two biggest factors for me in losing weight have been a daily food journal and regular exercise. It has been great coming here daily to see what others in my same position are doing and what they have to say. Welcome to the group, we're here for you!

Welcome aboard Carolyn. You are blessed to have such a big family. I hope one day I have a big family like yours.

The best advice I can give you is to take things easy and change things slowly. Don't try to do a lot at once or you might crash and burn. In my opinion, small lasting changes that become habits is a key issue in losing weight, and in keeping the lost weight off.

Good luck

I have to say, seeing Mary post her stats regularly is what motivated me to do mine. (Thanks, Mary!) I decided that it would help in my healing process in becoming someone who lives and thinks in a healthy way. Plus, it's a good accountability factor for me. I mean, I posted my weight on the world wide web for gosh sakes! I hope all goes well on your journey!

Carolyn, I'm 26 now. I already have 1 son (almost 2 years old now).. and I think I'll start TTC in summer.. I can financially afford a lot of children, so that's not a problem.. the thing is I'm just starting to lose weight and I want to lose some more before the pregnancy..

this and the thoughts of facing sleep deprivation again is scaring me.. can't we just skip ahead to the first birthday or something?? LOL

I am not sure what you mean by "finding your journal".... there's an online food & fitness tracker at ivillage, if that's what you mean. Here's a link:

http://diet.ivillage.com/0,,7v4xvc8r,00.html

Or do you mean using the journaling section here on the board? There's a section called "journaling & challenges".. just start a discussion and call "carolyn's journal" or whatever.. and keep posting to your thread.

What I don't understand is that you're saying you're starting back from scratch.. how come?.. you lost 13lbs, gained only 1.. then in total you lost 12 lbs.. that doesn't sound like scratch for me
