I have a question about my weightloss. I know that you are only suppose to weigh yourself once a week, and that was my plan, but curiosity got to me, and I weighed myself this morning. I started my diet(calorie counting)on this past Sunday, and when I started I was 210 lbs. Today is Friday and I weighed myself and the scale said 200lbs. I used the same scale as before, and it hasn't been messed with, and I weighed myself at the same time as before too. I have followed the recommended calorie intake of 1470 calories, going over it by 100 before and under it by 100 the following day. My question is, is it normal to take that much weight off in 5 days, or even safe? I haven't really been exercising that much, just counting my calories. I'm a little concerned. Anyone with answers please help.

Honestly, I wouldn't be too concerned with such a large initial weight loss. Depending on how poorly you were eating before, how much salt you were consuming, etc., it's very likely that you have lost a ton of stored water weight. I know you said you weighed yourself at the same time as before, but was it first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything? I never weigh myself any other way. Usually when I go from eating horribly/tons of fast food and restaurant food to on a strict diet, I will lose about 5 lbs in the first day or so, then about 10 total in the first 2 weeks. Then it drops to about 2-4 lbs every week when I stick with the diet. That's more than is recommended, but I am very tall and have always lost fairly quickly on most plans. I tend to lose more like a man would, and that may be what happens with you. I wouldn't get too concerned, but just remember that it's wonderful seeing that drop on the scale, but don't get discouraged when it doesn't drop so fast as the days go on. That's the hardest part for most people, staying focused when they are *only* losing 1 or 2 lbs a week, when that's an excellent amount of loss.

Don't worry about it.. as Staci said, you probably lost a lot of water. During my fist week, I lost 11 lbs.. it is a great boost.. but afterwards it will slow down. I lose about 1 lbs every 2 weeks now.

You're on a 1400-1500 calorie plan, and this is a good range of calories. Normally, recommendations are not to drop below 1200 calories.

Keep going girl, and enjoy your victory!!

Thank you. You're probably right, I think it's a lot of water weight too. I did drink a lot of water, I just wasn't expecting to loose that much water weight or just weight for that matter that quickly.

The first week, the weight "falls" off. Most is water, (I think) up to 50%.

"...When you follow a very low calorie diet that causes your weight to drop 10 pounds in 7 days, it’s physically impossible for all of that to be fat. What you’re really losing is water, glycogen, and muscle...."

The first week on Slim Fast I lost 8 pounds, but I know 5 HAD to be water.

Still, you are doing great. Stick with it and this summer you'll be a STAR!

Look at it this way. You didn't gain all your weight in six months, so it's not going to come off in six months.

I gained 70 pounds in 2-1/2 year. So I expect it's going to take me a year to lose it. Yeah, a year SEEMS like a long time. But on January 29, 2007 I'll be 140 pounds! And that year is worth it.

Angela, I look at the big picture. 6 months ago I was 30 lbs heavier. If I gave up during those 6 months, I will probably gain everything I lost and some more. And I know in the next 6 months I may be 10-15 pounds lighter. That's a total of 50lbs in a year. And that's a huge difference.

Oh and one more thing.. my son weighs around 28 pounds. When I carry him and walk around for a while I get exhausted. Then i realised something, I was walking around carrying more than his weight on my body. Now each time I lift him up, I can feel my accomplishment and this motivates me to continue.
