I was curious for those who're counting fat.. how many fat grams are you supposed to have in a day? I count calories, but I want to know if I should decrease my fat content a bit.

Thanks

if you are already counting calories all i would do... i find out the # of fat grams per serving and make sure that the fat is 30% or less of the total calories..

example: a mcdonalds hamburger is 260 calories and 9 grams of fat....
1 gram of fat = 9 calories so
take the 9grams of fat x 9 calories = 81
then 81 divided by 260 = .311 which means it is 31% fat...

I use Fitday and make sure my fat intake is at 30% which is what is recommended. But using ivillage's health calculator you can determine the min and max grams of fat you should intake everyday, and fitday allows you to set a goal to where you can track if you are staying within that amount. I personally lose weight better if I count fat versus calories, because if I just count calories, well I could eat say 50-70% fat which isn't helping any. Cutting fat down automatically cuts calories down as well because the higher the fat the more calories from what I have seen. SO if you are watching calories you have probably already cut the fat down some. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Well, to figure out how much fat you are supposed to have, technically you should take how many calories you are eating X 30% / 9. For example, if you are eating 1500 calories, that would come out to 450 max calories from fat, or 50 grams. I think that when you are counting calories you tend to automatically be low enough in fat because we usually avoid fat laden foods due to calorie count. I don't usually count, but I wouldn't try to go much lower than 25% of calories from fat, or you may have problems with not feeling full long enough.

Thanks for the information... I am usually around 1,200-1,500 which should put me at 40-50 grams fat. I just checked my journal and I am usually within those limits. Although in certain days I do drop to the 20's. Do you think this is healthy?

And I noticed in some days (well, ok weekends) I do get way over

I think as long as you have an average that is in a healthy range, you should be fine. I personally believe that my body responds better to losing weight when I don't do the same thing every day.
