Okay, question.... if I weigh 273 pounds and my motabolism is "practically non-existant" (doctor's quote) how many calories per day should I eat in order to loose weight. 1200 - 1500 or more? If I don't eat enough, I kill my motabolism even more, if I eat more I gain weight? I started working out on the trampoline yesterday and am planning on doing it everyday .... what do you guys think?

I don't know what your height, is or body frame, but it is nationally recommended that women consume 1600 calories and that men consume 2000 calories a day. I'm trying to loose weight, am 5'3" with a large frame, and weigh 200 lbs, I started at 210 lbs, and they recommended that I stay between 1400-1500 calories a day. I think that you'd be safe eating anywhere from 1200-1600 calories a day. I was told that it's when you drop below 1200 calories a day, that your metabolism shuts down, because it thinks that you're starving. Hope this helps.

Everything I read says that going below 1,200 will kill your metabolism. How many calories you need will depend on your gender, weight, height, body frame, lifestyle, and age. There are a lot of calculators on the web to calculate this. Here's one link for example, but there are many more:

Thanks guys. You kind of confirmed what I already knew. Going below 1200 kills you. Now, I am 5.7 with a large frame. According to my fitday.com software I can eat 2580 calories a day !!!! and I would loose 1 pound... however... that seems an aweful lot to me, so in the beginning I decided to work between 1500 and 2000, but I think I need to drop it still, cause it still seems too much. I'm thinking more in the range of 1200 to 1600. That should work, shouldn't it? All I want to loose is 1 pound a week (I don't loose fast anyway) but I don't want to mess up my motabolism in the long run, so maybe that will help. What do you think?

I don't lose very fast either.. I'd say go with the 1,200-1,600 and see how it goes. If you're hungry all the time, then add some calories.. also watch your energy levels and your attention span.. have a snack when you feel drained. I also read that eating frequent meals help sustain your energy and ups your metabolism. I myself can't eat very often, but I pack a couple of healthy snacks with me at the office and make it a point to eat them along the day (of course I work them into the daily calorie plan)
