well.. it's going to be hard to stay motivated because you're making a lifestyle change. What you were doing before was easy and you might have even liked it- though you didn't like the results of getting big.
first thing to figure out is why you want to lose weight (honestly).. you feel tired, sad, can't do the things you like to do, can't wear cute clothes, want more energy, want to be healthier, someone else will love me/respect me more if I lose weight. so why do you want to lose weight?
so then once you know your reason(s) for wanting to lose weight, you'll have a better understanding about what should motivate you.
set smaller goals- saying you're going to workout every day and stick to a meal plan and drink nothing but water every day (for example) and then freak out when you have a cheeseburger isn't going to work.
different people follow different meal plans- but I think we can all agree to stay away/or use in moderation foods that have high fat and high calories. Consume more fruits and veggies, drink more water instead of soda/ high calorie drinks. If you're really confused about what to eat see if your dr. can send you to a nutrionist so they can get a plan that's right for you.
hope this helps some
My First 10% of Body Weight
I can sympathise, Although I am much much older than you. Lose your weight while you are young and keep it off. Much harder to lose as you get older.
I have tried every diet on the books: WW with a 20/day starting walking program, gained weight after 5 wks. People there first told me - eat on the low side of your number, then eat on the high side, hmmm, lets go over your food journal, everything looks ok. (yes but it was twice as much food as I had been eating previous to joining.) What idiots! I found no motivation in the meetings.... Way back when, Nasty Jennie Craig kicked me out because I asked why I had to buy 10-14 pkts/wk at $1 each of their diet salad dressing. It was so salty I could not stand it. Normally I would just let the juice from some cut up tomatoes be my salad dressing. All their canned foods were too salty tasting, but no choice they said I had to buy the full $90 wk food plain and "must" eat it all, no exchanges or returns, which did not even include my dairy or fruits and veggies. After 3 wks with no weight loss I was not in a good mood with the young, perky counselor who said she had lost 5 lbs once so she knew how hard dieting was..
Every year from my 40's on with onset of perimenopause, I have cut back on something out of my diet, and still gained weight. I also have started on many exercise programs and had to stop due to injury or illness (two fractured ankle bones, broken toes, stress fracture, bad back, osteo arthritus knees, tennis elbow now, etc), in which I would gain back more than I had lost in the program. Medical Weight loss clinic, about 800 cal a day, I did lose 15 lb. in 17 weeks, after they had assured me I would lose at least three lbs a week for the first three months. Unfortunately, I did not think I could afford to keep going when I lost my job, as it cost $20-$40/week for their mandatory "supplements" and vitamins, and the slow loss meant it would take another two years... besides they were gross. The bathroom where everyone had to pee on a stick first was always filthy, with pee and pee cups all over. then you had to walk thru the place to the office to show the color of your pee stick, then they had you throw the stick away in an overflowing wastebasket that sat right next to their food sample table. "would you like to try the "brownies" made from the chocolate pudding supplement?" ugh, gag me. gross - how many pee sticks had dripped on it? Lets see, also tried, Seattle Suttons when I was in a cast, and several others.(anyone remember the Susan Powder diet? - I walked and gained, then tripped and broke a toe)
anyways, I have never drank soda, so cannot cut that out, I love fruits and veggies and eat a lot of them, I drink lots of water (room temp only, cold water hurts my chest and I cannot drink a lot of it),stick to chicken and fish pretty much, I strictly limit candy, and now very rarely any baked goods, or breads or pasta unless in a lean cuisine or such, also only skim milk and sweetener in morning coffee. My cheese is limited to low fat mozzerrella, eat low fat. no fat yogurt for treats. I hate exercise but I do what I can, it hurts, I feel worse, tired, stiff, sore after exercising. It is expensive to buy fresh good nutritius food, and I have a small budget, smaller due to $18/month for my gym membership. I track my food and exercise on the free web version of fitday.com. So far this year, I am gaining weight, because I have increased my calorie intake to 1200/cal/day from 900 to 1000 cal day, because everyone on this board last year flamed me I was eating too little. I am very, very short. Just more to lose now, more time it will take. Although my dr. last year did not think i was eating too little, she had also offered me diet pills then to reduce calories further, but I had heard too many bad things about them, so passed.
I look at the LA weight loss ad, the gal says she lost 98 lb in 37 months and wonder, can I afford a year and a half on that program? would it really work? how expensive is it? there are none around me.
Hello Jena, we're the same age... I'll be 27 in August.
You say you can't find anything to eat.. well why don't you try this: journal the normal stuff you eat for a day, and use fitday.com to see the calories and fat (online version is free). Then see what's increasing your fats/calories very much and look at ways to change that. I also agree with the poster that said to take is easy and not to overwhelm yourself. I believe that the only way we can take the weight off and keep it off is by changing our eating habits for good. OK I know how cliche that sounds, but a year ago I was a junk food junkie and I could eat 2-3 huge burgers in one sitting. Right now I don't crave it that much and when I have it, it's usually one burger or less. So believe me, the habits do change.
I am facing the same struggle with exercise. I have to force myself to start exercising, but once I do I feel great. I am trying to establish a habit right now and I hope that eventually I'll be looking forward to exercising. I am also increasing my options. For example,
