Hi! I'm just lurking around for a while. I thought I'd let you know I'm here. I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and so I have to lose weight. I'm not a happy camper. I'm over 200 lbs and have been for decades. Oddly enough it just doesn't bother me. I am changing my lifestyle against my will. Doc wants me to lose 70 pounds which will put me just under 200. I guess it would be cool to state my weight with a 1 instead of a 2. We'll see, assuming I can actually ever get there! LOL! I figure if I am able to lose 70 lbs., I might as well go for the whole thing.

What do you think? Will I fit in here? I hope so. Y'all seem pretty friendly. Okay, back into lurkerdom for me for now.

Welcome and good luck to you. I hope you decide that this isn't against your will as it will make it easier. My mom has diabetes and I am scared to death I will end up with it too if I don't do something but so far I am good. I wish you the best of luck, have you decided on a method of weight loss yet?

Thanks. It is against my will due to the fact that I never would have done it otherwise. I don't want to do it and I want to whine about it. I can't find the whining board anywhere on ivillage! LOL! I was diagnosed on March 21, saw the Nutrition Nazi a couple days later -- went on a brief food binge to say "good-bye" and have been almost perfect ever since. Waaaaaa..... According to my scale I have lost 8 lbs, but I don't know how that compares with the doc's scale.

As far as the weight loss plan, the Nutritionist gave me certain amounts of servings (believe me, not much) of each food group, nothing sweet (obviously), and hardly any carbs. I can have 3 servings of fruit a day (a small apple, half a banana, 4 oz. juice, etc.) I get 6 oz. of protein a day. Four servings of veggies (preferably fresh). Four servings of fat (my favorite, hee, hee). I get 6 servings of starch (woo hoo!). A serving of starch is half a cup of mashed potatoes or half a hamburger bun, etc. I'm supposed to eat whole wheat bread or noodles or whatever. Sigh. I haven't figured out how to incorporate extra stuff -- ketchup, marinades, etc. I kinda get the impression that it is plain broiled, unflavored meat from here on out. I go back to the Nutrition Nazi next week. She and I got off on a very wrong foot from the beginning. I do not like her as a person, not just because she is taking away all the good stuff. She was somewhat insulting.

I think you should find a different nutritionist. I think it would make is so much easier to follow the plan and work with the nutritionist, if you like them and get along.

Welcome to the board! Maybe after a few more pounds, you'll start to notice the difference in how you feel and then decide that its not against your will so much. You definitely need another nutritionist though. Good luck!

My mother has had diabetes for years and recently went to a doctor who specializes in working with patients with diabetes. She recommended the glycemic index diet to her. I don't know much about it, but she says it is extremely easy to follow and has lost 14 lbs. Whatever you do, I wish the best for you. Good luck!

Hello Mary Anne.. and welcome to the board... we're glad to have you with us... don't worry you'll fit just fine :)

Please consider changing your nutritionist.. she doesn't feel very friendly. I worked with a nutritionist once and it made a lot of difference for me.. I was looking forward to the visits and the 1-on-1 encounter was really helping me. If you're unable to change her till your next visit, don't shy away with the questions.. ask as much as you can whether she likes it or not. You have the right, after all she's getting paid to do this job!

Have fun with the new experience!! I mean it's not like it's a punishment (although it sometimes feels like it LOL).. If you're determined to lose the weight, then a positive attitude will make a huge difference! Change is not always bad.. at least it has a fresh new feeling to it :) .. and about the tasteless food, I don't think it should be tasteless.. I don't know a lot about diabetes diet, but I know it shouldn't be tasteless.. so ask that nutritionist for some good tasting recipes.. and don't leave until you get them!

Feel free to whine here as much as you like (that's what I do LOL).. there's even a 'vent' emoticon now :)

well sounds like you are doing pretty good so far. Just stick to it. Me I wouldn't be able to stick to plain broiled meats with no seasoning. I have to season my food so I can at least enjoy what I do eat. LOL
If you do find that whiners board, let me know okay, I will join you there too...LOL
