1. how do you end up at a nutritionist?
2. are they expensive to go to?
3. Can one lose weight with mostly exercise but eating what they want to eat?
Explanation: If I eat what I usually eat, just less of it, say cut it in half, and exercise do you think I could lose the weight? I don't eat too god awful bad most days, I eat mostly broiled or baked or grilled meats, veggies I have been craving lately but I like starches, and I like some fruit so if I eat more veggies and fruit, only whole wheat breads for the most part, and cut my meals in half, ex don't go back for seconds...LOL do you think that exercising will help me lose it without going on a drastic reduction of calories??
I don't seem to have much of a problem getting motivated to exercise for the most part, but the eating is very difficult for me as I am a VERY picky eater. My biggest problem with my eating is portions. I eat too much of what I do eat, then I regret it cuz I am too full. If I put too much on my plate I feel I have to eat it so it don't go to waste. But I am working on that, I have lately had to get to go boxes at restaurants becuz I couldn't finish a regular meal. Or I put my food up for later at home if I start feeling full. So I am improving, but I don't want to have to GIVE UP anything for the fear of feeling completely deprived and bingeing which I have ended up doing the last few days. It hits me in the evening, so I think I do better if I eat what I want, just less of it. What do ya'll think? Most of ya'll have been at this a lot longer with a whole lot better results than me? COnsidering right now I am above my starting weight, I am a little discouraged, even though I know it has to be water weight. WHY CAN"T I DO THIS? I mean I am trying to get my mind there but it hasn't happened yet. I know I would do better if I could get my dh to choose places to go out to eat where I can get healthier foods, but he hates to go to the few restaurants that serve veggies and broiled/baked meats. He does like subway so that is good, I have been trying to convince him to just go there when we go out, but my youngest dd hates it so she comes home and eats something different...LOL. Can't please everyone and it is hurting my chances of succeeding because they bring the yummy bad stuff in and sit in my face eating it. Ever felt like you family does't want you to succeed? There are 6 in this house and I am the only one with weight issues. Anyways this post has gotten way longer than I intended so I will bid you all a Good day and go clean somemore.

i asked my doctor for help and she set me up with a nutritionist at her office, so my insurance will pay for most of it, i just have to pay the co-pay.
i have tried counting calories, cutting back, limiting sugars and carbs, but i obviously don't know what i'm doing, because i haven't had any results. some people are great at this and can do it all on their own. i am not one of those lucky people! i need all the help i can get!!
i know there are a lot of people on this board that have had great success with just changing the way they eat, and i'm hoping to soon be one of those people.
what i guess i'm trying to say it, i am kind of in the same situation as you, so i am looking for help. hopefully the wonderful people on this board will have some great advice for you. i'll let everyone know how the appt with the nutritionist goes, maybe that also will be helpful.
just keep trying though, and don't give up!!
Well considering I don't have any health insurance I don't think it will pay for it...LMAO!! I will see what I can find as far as who can help me though with little to no expense involved. I am hoping my exercise helps mostly though.
Thanks for your response.

Wow! Really timely question, as I just went to a nutritionist today.
I was referred through a physician, which is how she typically gets patients as she's affiliated with cardiac rehab and weight management programs at a hospital. I was worried, too, about the cost. It turns out that my insurance will cover most of it, but even without that her fees are $75 for the initial evaluation and $25 for followup visits (maybe once a month or every 6 weeks for me, but it's very much set-your-own-schedule). Worth it to me, because I know most of the things you're supposed to do BUT need that nudge from a professional to keep it going. She also gave me some suggested books that address emotional eating (big problem for me), and is much cheaper than a psychologist!
As for her advice, it was sound and long-term, although she did advise that if I needed a quick-results jolt for motivation, I might want to try the South Beach Diet for a month or so. Just got the book today, but Cal (my boyfriend) wants to try it too. Wish us luck! And good luck to you!

Have you spoken to your doctor about your desire to lose weight? My doctor hooked me up with a monthly class led by a nutritionist. It was the perfect thing to get me started.
Check with your doctor to see if he can hook you up.

Thank you all for you input, yes I have spoken to my dr but the only thing he could tell me is less calories and more exercise. He knows I am trying but said there isn't a better way to do it. He just encourages me to keep at it. Without insurance he knows it will be hard for me to go to anyone specializing in anything due to cost so.........I guess I am pretty much on my own with it. But I am trying, if I can get the eating down I think I will be okay. Like I have said many times, eating is my problem, I tend to eat too much. I grew up able to eat anything I want and as much as I want and until I had kids it wasn't a problem. Now it seems everything I eat sticks to me like glue. LOL!! Oh to have my high metabolism back....can I dream now?? LOL

Hi Angela,
Trying the "magic dust" emoticon to see if it brings back your high metabolism. (If it works, please return the favor!)

PS-- If not, I'll also encourage you to "keep at it". Please return the favor-- Oh, you already have! Thanks!!!
Okay, I am not a nutritionist, I am not an expert. I can just tell you the things I have read and what others have read. I have always been interested in weight loss, and how it works, so I read a lot.
First off, about the "burn more then you eat" That freaks me out when people say that. Because I used to think oh my gosh, then I have to work out like 4 hours a day!!! Not true. Based on your resting heart rate and other factors, you are always burning calories. You should NEVER EVER go below 1200 calories. 1200 calories is what our bodies need to just function. Like typing, breathing, walking, digesting food....etc. So, consider if you were on a 1200 calorie diet, and you went to the gym and burned 300 calories, 5 times a week. You would have burned 1500 calories in a week, and around 1300 calories equals one pound. So, you would be techinacally losing just over 1 pound a week.
As was mentioned before, and in my opinion and reading, if you are currently maintaining, with the way you are eating, JUST adding exercise should help you start to lose weight without even changing what you are eating. But, you also have to realize that eventually you WILL have to change some of your eating habits, once you build up to the point that exercise alone is no longer working. But, you could just start small. Drink less soda, more water, change things out for low fat.
If you go to sparkpeople.com, you can set up a free account. There are TONS of resources there, with message boards where you can ask questions, and a nutritionist will answer you. It also takes into account, exercise, weight, age, and determines a calorie range that would be the best for you, and you can track what you are eating, and see the areas where you might need to change things a bit, or even if you are eating in a healthy weight range for your lifestyle. I hope this helps, sorry it was so long, and good luck!!
Now see, I have always read and been told that 3500 calories = 1 lb.
where do you get the 1300?? That would be like SO EASY to do that I would be ecstatic to learn that it was only 1300 calories = 1 lb.
WEll I figured it I started with the exercise, and done switched to diet coke then that should help. I already buy some lowfat stuff and broil, bake, or grill my meats most of the time, and try to find lean cuts of meat. Right now I am trying to eat more veggies and less meat. That is my current goal, and hey today I suceeded. Of course I had a pc of pie for dessert but hey I eat less meat and it was baked chicken so that was good. LOL
One step at a time is the way I am trying to go.

My doctor actually said some of the same things -- just eat better and exercise more. Well, easier said than done! I was supposed to go to a nutritionist that he referred me to, but my insurance does not cover one red cent (and the consultation was going to be over $200). So, I was on my own.
I lost weight before I got sick three years ago (and ended up on lots of meds, extended bed rest, and then very limited activity until this past December) using Richard Simmons Food Mover System. The greatest thing about that was that it kept track of my eating and water intake for me, showed me what I could eat throughout the day and most importantly taught me about REAL portion sizes -- keeps it brainless (important for me) and you can eat ANYTHING in moderation. I had to start exercising VERY slowly and am still not up to what is recommended to lose weight. On January 9th I started at 328 pounds (I am 5'9), now I am down to 273 pounds (down 55 lbs).
I am not sure if this answered your question, but I hope it helps.
Good luck and best wishes!
Kelly
