Depressed....

I am up 3 lbs today. Okay I feel bloated so I know it is probably just water weight. Here is my dilemma though. Last week I lost 4.5 lbs. I ate mostly turkey and chicken all week. This week I am eating pork and beef, and I am not losing. I can't just give up pork and beef for the rest of my life, that would be a mighty boring menu, not to mention I am a born and bred southern woman, and red meat is just a part of my life. That is how I lost the 15 lbs before though is no red meat. I lost it in 2 weeks. DOes this make any sense? Yes red meat has more fat and calories but my thing is what is wrong with my body that it wants to reject my fave foods?? I mean seriously I can't lose if I eat what I love? So what do I do? How do I change my eating habits permenantly and not eat the red meat? I cook for 6 counting myself, they will NOT eat chicken, turkey and fish all the time, so how do I continue to lose weight and still eat with my family? I guess I should remind you all that I am a VERY picky eater. I don't eat a lot of veggies so that is already limited, & I don't eat salads at all. Frozen dinners usually have a lot of stuff in them I don't like. Yes I have tried it, & I even tried to force myself to eat some of it trying to get used to it so I could have more choices but I couldn't do it. So knowing this does anyone have any suggestions??

I am no expert, but I do have some thoughts. A particular food I do not believe will keep you from losing weight (except of course if you eat a BigMac everyday *lol*)

I am a firm believer in 'everything in moderation'. Eating red meat everyday is just not good for you or anybody. We all have weeks where we gain. It happens.

I think that if you eat a balanced diet, mix it up and stay within the calorie range(if that is what you are following) then you should be OK.

Please don't get discouraged. It happens to all of us. Heck, when I first joined WW the 1st time (I'm on my 4th time now) I gained weight the first week on the plan-you know when everyone else usually has big losses-talk about depressing. The key is to press on, move ahead and keep doing what you know is the right thing to do!!!

HTH.

hmmm.. that's a rough one Angela! In my humble opinion you can't give up the foods you love forever. You're going to feel cheated, deprived and resentful until you break and next thing ya know you in a hazy bubble filled with cheeseburger wrappers. (ok that may be an over exaggeration, but you get the idea.)

so you know red meat makes you gain weight more quickly, and you know you can't exclude it from your menu. what about picking the leanest red meat possible. Or instead of doing a week of white meat and a week of red meat why not try doing a couple of meals a week with red meat/controlling the portion sizes.

I too am a picky eater.. and that's something both you and I are going to have to deal with. I'm trying to incorporate at least 1 new /unliked veggie in my evening meal. Even if I only eat a few bites.. maybe I can grow accustomed to it.. even (dare I say it) learn to like it. I'm having some luck with salad by using a thinner lighter leaf as my base and chopping up other veggies more finely. I still don't crave veggies/ don't really even like them.. but it's a work in progress. I think for you, because you have kids, it's more important to try to change your habits and show them how to eat properly.. and show them that if you work really hard at something.. it can make a difference! (not to be preachy so I hope it didn't come off that way) I know you said you've tried to force yourself to eat different things.. I guess my advice there is keep trying. Just like anythign else in this lifestyle change.. if you at first don't succeed.. try try again!

hope it helps Angela:)

Oh you are going to roll with laughter here, My kids do eat all that stuff. They prefer veggies over meat. Matter of fact they would prefer not to eat meat most days...That is amazing considering their roots. LMAO Both dd's eat salads, both eat other veggies and fruit they love. Both drink water though my 5 yr old just started that. That is about ALL my 12 yo drinks now other than juice and tea. I have never allowed them to have a lot of soda and if they do get it I make them drink sprite except for special occaions. Junk food (candy and such) dd12 doesn't care too much for it, and dd5 and ds would eat it regularly if I let them (their dad does too) But I only allow them to have it after they have eaten real food and only in moderation. Myself, I only eat a lot of that kind of stuff every 5-6 weeks (PMS) and I try not to do it then, unless I feel like I am going to go out of my mind if I don't get it. The last few months though I have wanted ice cream more than anything.
My eating habits: I love carrots, cucumbers, can tolerate tomatoes sometimes, but can't stand lettuce. Leave the lettuce to the rabbits. I would rather just eat the carrots and cucumbers and leave the rest. I love apples, pears, peaches, watermelon, grapes, oranges, get the point, so I like/love enough healthy food to get by, but my kids usually gobble it up before I can get any...LMAO!! The red meat situation...I usually alternate between beef, pork, and chicken during the week. Last week the only reason I ate turkey and chicken so much was because I cooked a turkey breast for Easter and well my nephew and I are the only ones in the house that really like it so we are the ones who ate on it all week. Chicken was just because that was what I was craving mostly last week. I did eat some beef and pork just less than usually. SO my decision/new goal is to convince DH to let's eat red meat only a couple times a week. 1 x beef & 1 X pork. That way, not only am I eating healthier but so is he. BELIEVE ME he needs to adjust his eating habits before he gets seriously overweight. He is only a few lbs now but it can get out of control quick as we all know. IF I could get him to give up candy and soda, he would be good to go. LOL Plus he has cholesterol problems so more white meat would be good for him.
That said. My goal for the weekend is to be back at 252 by monday then to start my new goals. Considering the freezer is empty and I have to go grocery shopping. I will just buy less red meat and more fish/chicken/turkey!! DH is liable to have a hissy fit but he will get over it. IF he cares so much about my health as he says he does he will get over it right?
Believe me when I say I am so glad our kids do not have our eating habits. DD12 is a stick and she is already worried about her weight, so the only thing I worry about with her right now is her trying to lose more weight. We are actually more worried about her developing an eating disorder than getting big. She is 5'2 and weighs 102 and school mates tell her she is fat and she believes them. Kids can be stupid sometimes, why would they tell someone that when they are so obviously not?

Well rambled enough.

I watched the tail end of one of those news shows last night, ya know, the 60 minutes, 20/20 kind. ( Don't know what this one was).. This guy seriously did a protein shake and water fast for 8 months.. 8 months... He lost 180 lbs... I could not do that.. I am desperate to lose weight this time but I could not do that.

Anyway, I know that it is hard. I have been really struggling and going over my calories the past few days. I know that I can also gain weight if I eat one salad too many a day. My body has always been resistent to weight loss.

My kids also love veggies and fruit but so does their daddy. I don't mind them as much as you do but they are never my first choice.

I really don't know how to change my tastes, I am just hoping that if I keep doing the low fat thing long enough I'll get used to it. I did do a detox for 3 weeks to start with and that really helped me to not crave sugar and carbs.

My husband is a chiropractor. I know a homeopathic Dr with a fat wife quite a contradiction. He really is a good Dr. It is my fault that I am fat. ( I'm rambling, sorry) Anyway, once I quite nursing our youngest he put me on the detox because my blood tests did not look good. I have metabolic syndrome. A nice way to say that all this extra fat is causing me to be prediabetic and put me at a higher risk for cardiac problems. Which both run in my family.

To make a long story short or not(SORRY), the detox did help with my physiological cravings. Now when I crave stuff it is psychological.

I don't know if any of that helped you at all but it was kind of good for me to actually say it to someone else. The health stuff I mean.

I hope that you have a better week this week and also sometimes you can gain weight because you are putting on muscle. So, if you just started lifting or if you worked out more than normal you could have added muscle which weighs more than fat and in the long run will help you burn fat.

Feel better

Thanks alot. I went and checked out several books from the library one of which was the south beach diet, and it is a lot like the one my friend lost all her weight on and sounds like it would be fairly easy to follow so I think I will copy some of the pages on what to eat and not to eat from it and try to follow it as closely as I can. I am not to fond of a diet at all but Dh and I did decide to cut the red meats down to 2 x a week and keep the white meats the most prominent in our diets. Of course tonite I was a very bad girl. We went out with friends and I had a drink which I haven't done in well over a yr. LOL I don't drink much and I know it is bad but it did help me relax and feel better to cut lose and have some fun. Tommorrow is a new day and now that I feel better mentally it is time to continue. I don't think I really gained any but we will see Monday. Tommorrow I drink PLENTY of water and eat healthy foods and weigh in Monday morning.

BTW I haven't really exercised more, but maybe it could be a little bit of muscle gain cuz I have been working out a few weeks now so maybe it is started to build something. That would be nice..LOL

G'nite all (1036 pm here)

It's great that you're feeling better Angela. Limiting the red meat to 2x a day? That I can't do LOL.

Red meat is higher in calories than chicken. Also the serving size of red meat is small (because meat is heavier). A 3oz piece of meat is the size of a casette tape. To decrease calories and fat, try leaner pieces of meat. Or cut the fat from the pieces you're going to eat even before cooking them. The cooking method

I am already buying leaner cuts and cutting the fat off, I only broil/grill/or bake it. Dh and I have decided to cut back even more so only 2 x a week. We bought lots of fish and chicken, ground sirloing and the leanest pork chops we could find. I am going to grill most of it especially the fish, no way I can eat it any other way other than fried and that won't do. I am going to try to follow the south beach plan as closely as I can without going insane. I think I can give up bread and dairy, and sweet for 2 weeks..LOL the sugar may be hard cuz I love to put bbq and ketchup on my meats. Wish me luck with that. I have worked my butt off cleaning the yard and we bought some bushes to plant so I am so definitely worked out today...LMAO WELCOME back Mary.

Dear Kinda,

Can I ask what the detox consisted of? Is it something we'd need medical supervision for, and how long did it take? (Enquiring minds...)

Thank you!

Hi, Angela--

Hope you're feeling better today!

Give up red meat? I don't think so. But cutting back in frequency and watching the fat content/cooking style for a while is so admirable... especially if it means you see the numbers go down and your spirits go up. And let me know when you find that good-tasting, low-calorie, low-fat, low sodium bbq sauce... sounds so good.

I know what you mean about your body being a traitor-- my thing is sodium, which I love, crave, NEED... and too much makes me feel like death. Which I usually remember AFTER I've overindulged.

Can we convince each other that life in moderation-land can be wonderful?

LOL My folks have always told me my blood was going to dry up due to my salt intake but ya know, I have never experienced any serious side affects other than the occasional bloating.

Let you know how it goes.
