eating disorder nurses opinion on low ..

I went and seen an eating disorder clinic and seen a nurse there who counselled me on nutrition and how to lose weight. She explained to me that going on low cal diet that is dramatic can cause health problems as well as eating too much. I am an overeater...binge eater. I self medicate with food.

She said a helpful way to lose weight is to do it gradually so your body gets use to eating less. Like say, you would normally eat 2500 cals a day, then for the first 2 weeks eat 500 cals less and then go to 1500 for a month and then to 1200 after that. It helps the body not feel like it is going into starvation and your metabolism sores, along with exercise and you will actaully lose weight quicker and healthier. I am going to give it a try. Eating from each food group will be hard for me each day, but she said to try, in time it will happen to where I will eat from each food group and keep it in my calorie range.

I just thought I would share this with those of you looking to do a low cal diet. I still have along way to go. It is hard to not want to eat what you crave.

Thanks for the info, sounds like a good idea. I know I haven't been able to stick to low cal cuz I starve therefore I have been trying to stay below 2200 which is still 1000 cal below what I was eating. I was shocked to discover I was eating about 3500 cal a day. So needless to say I was tickled to cut it down to 2200 or less every day, but it has been hard to get there and took me a month to do it. That is where I am now and I am trying to go lower now that I have been pretty consistent with that for the past few weeks so glad to hear I am on the right track there so I don't have to feel quite so guilty...LOL

Thanks, that sounds sensible to me. I'm trying for 1,300 calories a day right now, and don't feel deprived yet, but also am not beating myself up when I go over that... life's too short, and I've had too many weddings to go to this month. Not to mention that convincing myself that I've blown it is just another way to say, "bring on the pizza".

I just started reading a book "The Taming of the Chew: A Holistic Guide to Stopping Compulsive Eating". (One of my homework assignments from my nutritionist... I'm a self-medicator, too.) I'll let you know if it has any good tips.

Thanks for the info Tina. After I go sky high for a while (getting over 2,000 calories), I usually get down to 1,600 first then I go to the 1,200-1,300 range. I find it easier this than getting down one shot (otherwise I feel very hungry all the time). Thanks for sharing.. now I don't feel so guilty for last week when I averaged at 1,600 :)
