Hi everyone. I'm new here. I started out over on the Getting Fit in your 20s board, but I feel like I'll be better suited here. I'm 22, 5'4" and weigh 310. I just got blood tests back from my dr, and my cholesterol is high. Now it's not just a matter of wanting to lose weight and eat better...it's a matter of needing to do it for my health (and it should have always been that way). I'd like to get down to 150, and I'm setting that as my goal by Jan 1, 2008. I haven't sat down and made a list of smaller more reachable goals yet, but I will. My eating habits are absolutely terrible and I rarely exercise, so I've got ALOT of work to do. I used to eat fast food probably 3-4 times a week. We went grocery shopping yesterday and I got things like yogurt and fruits and vegetables, but I was at a loss of what to get for meals. Guess I'll be doing more reading and research. I'm a kinda busy person, so I tend to try to find more simple meals and snacks. I joined here because I figured it would help to have people to bounce ideas off of and vent to. Thanks for listening :)

Welcome to the board. You found a great place. You sound just like me. I like to keep it plain, simple, quick and easy meals. I too have been working on trying to find meals that I can make that are low cal, healthy but yet the rest of my family likes. It sucks to make food for me and then for them. I am still looking so I wish I could help you out on that. I have a 9mo old that keeps me busy thru out the day and then b4 I know it it's time for dd to get home from school and then bf to get home from work. So b4 I know it my day is shot. But one of these days I hope to devote to working on a meal plan for us. Good luck and welcome.

Thanks a bunch...I don't have any children yet, and dh and I usually don't eat together because we both work in retail. When we do eat together it's absolutely horrible for me. Like today I have to leave in a few to go to work, and on my way to work I have to stop and get him a burger from a fast food joint near blockbuster. It's not gonna be easy to say no to a burger, but I HAVE to. I'm glad to be here.

Welcome I wish you all the luck. Dieting is so hard especially
with all the fast food commercials and not to mention 1 on every corner.
But I found if ya don't get burned out on it chicken is great to make
easy and just add your sides with it but I bake me chicken breast
with herbs and spices example 1 day lemon and pepper the next I have a
garlic and spice the the nexy I have barbque (Mcormic makes a babrbque
powder thats good for you), then I have my veggies either green beans
and a plain bake pototoe (add 2%cheese butter spray fat free sour cream)
another route to go is kraft southbeach all ready made meals they taste
great and theres a vareity to chose from they even make cookies and
good cereal bars (peanutbutter crunch is my fave)Anyway I hope this

Welcome and good luck to you. I have no advice for you as I haven't found success myself yet but still working on it. All I can do is offer you luck of which I am sure you as well as the rest of us will need. I struggle with saying no to fast food myself so I am right there with you.

i'm in a similar boat,
5'4" 312 lbs (but i'm 34 yrs old). (my max weight was 342)

i personally don't count calories, points, don't measure things out.. i just don't have the time or energy.. ( i have a 2 yr old and a 10 month old)...
.
my main "strategy" is to not eat 2nd's or 3rd's and to try to eat "NORMAL" portion sizes.
drink lots of water, eat more "raw" veggies & fruits and try to get some activity 3x/week. (walking, mowing the yard, playing with my kids etc).

Hello--

Welcome to the board! I'm not as busy as you, but am so much lazier. What has helped me avoid the lure of easy fast food is to have a general pattern for eating and to shop so I have everything I need on hand (one less excuse to cheat). My lunches are generally frozen entrees with a salad, so I stock up when they're on sale and always keep pre-washed romaine hearts around. Same sort of thing for breakfasts (slimfast & fruit-- I don't do mornings very well) and snacks (low-fat mozzarella sticks, veggies, yogurt dip, sugarfree fudgesicles, etc.), and for most dinners (something much like Niapage's plan, usually chicken/fish/blackbean burger/omelet/beef, vegetables and/or salad, and maybe a potato depending on what I've had the rest of the day).

One of the best bits of advice I got early on was to invest in a pedometer (a cheap but serviceable model might be $10-15). Especially working in retail, you probably already get a fair amount of exercise without realizing it, and the pedometer makes it easy to ramp up your steps/workout over time. I'm convinced this is much, much more effective than trying to lose weight by dieting alone.

It's great that you are already sensible enough to take a long-term approach to this, and are ready to investigate your options and move forward from there. Good luck!
