'Fat Man Walking'
Obese Man Nearing His Final Destination in Cross-Country Trek

LEDGEWOOD, N.J., May 8, 2006 — - New York is a long way from his San Diego home, and the self-proclaimed "Fat Man Walking" has almost reached his destination.

Steve Vaught began walking last year from California in a bid to tackle his weight problem. Vaught had ballooned up to 410 pounds, and decided a cross-country walk would be the way to work off the fat.

Vaught says he's due to arrive Tuesday in Manhattan, more than 100 pounds lighter and 25-hundred miles from his home. The trek has taken its toll. Vaught says he's gone through tens of pair of shoes while suffering everything from massive blisters to stress fractures.

He says he hopes the trip not only makes him leaner, but also promotes a healthy lifestyle for others.

Thanks for the motivation Shawna.. to tell you the truth, my first impression was that this guy is nuts and there should be another way to do it than spend 6 months of his life hiking and busting his feet. Then I read that section and now I understand where he's coming from.

But how nutty is spending a fortune on miracle weight loss drugs or fad diets that never seem to have lasting results or dangerous surgeries that cost about the same as a luxury car?

Living your life without health insurance because you are considered too high risk.

What about the fact that only 3% of weight loss attempts are permanently successful?

What about the anxiety, depression and pain involved in everyday activities when you are fat?

I saw him on some news show a couple months ago and i thought he was crazy too, and his wife was crazy for letting him leave her alone with the kids for that long.

but congrats to him for doing it. i know i couldn't.
