When do you weigh?
| Tue, 06-13-2006 - 6:35pm |
Hi all
I read an article this weekend that said dieters keep their weight off longer if they weigh themselves every day, becauser they monitor their weight more closely. I was always taught to weigh myself once per week. What do you think?
Thanks for any and all input!

I think it is good to weigh in once a week, at the same time, in the same conditions.

Hi Jessica,
I think different styles work better for different people on this. I know WW likes you to stay away from the scale during the week, but I tend to do best when I weigh myself every morning. If the news is good, it reinforces what I'm doing. If the news is bad (and it can't be THAT bad in just one day), it makes me really focus on the day ahead. Actually, the whole thing is about focus-- I tend to be a careless muncher when I get busy, and paying attention on a daily basis helps me with that. (As long as I remember to do it!) Also, if I weigh just once a week and the news is bad (which may just be an aberration), I take it more as a personal failure and less as a minor adjustment that needs to be made.
Oh, yeah... my ritual is: naked, first thing in the morning, empty stomach and bladder. I'll take every ounce I can get!

I weigh almost every day but the last "diet" I went on asked that you do that. I only record it once a week. That day has been mondays but think I am going to change it to Fridays, since I have a harder time drinking water and watching my sodium levels on weekends.

I try to just weigh myself once a week, but it is hard. I have had to put the scale out of sight in order to accomplish this. But I DO find myself pulling it out during the week.
I think once a week is good. I think it is a true measure. If you splurge a little (as we all do) and them weigh in the next day, it can be discouraging. JMO

I think weighing every day is a double edged sword. I've always weighed every day, and it really works for me. Mainly that's because I realize that if I see a 3 lb gain in one day, then it's not really a gain, even if I ate horribly the day before. And, on the days when the scale goes down, it's extra motivation to continue on for the week. For some people, though, seeing a gain of even 1/2 lb in one day is depressing and kills their motivation, and for those people, weighing in less often is the best bet. I think it's all about personality and being realistic.

It seems like daily weighing is better than we thought. Here is part of the article that I copied from Ivillage.com regarding weighing in:
Daily weighing helps people lose more weight
According to a study of over 3,000 people in weight loss and weight maintenance programs conducted by researchers at the University of Minnesota, daily weighing is an effective strategy. Of those studied, 20 percent reported never weighing themselves, while 40 percent said they weighed themselves daily or weekly. Those who weighed in daily lost 12 pounds on average versus an average of 6 pounds for those who weighed themselves weekly; while those who skipped the scale gained 4 pounds on average.
Lead researcher Jennifer Linde, associate professor at the University of Minnesota, states that daily weighing is independent of diet and exercise techniques that promote weight loss. She suggests that it may be easier to make small, daily corrections in activity levels and food intake rather than trying to compensate after a larger weight gain over a period of days or even weeks.
