Hey all, I found this site last year, and found it so useful, to talk to people with similar problems like me.
I'm only 21 but all my life, I have been overweight, and the problem just seemed to keep mounting. Anyhow after visiting the Dr. this morning, I have to finally do something about my weight problem, as she is refusing to prescribe me, my medication, due to my weight.
The thing that REALLY annoys me, is that - for years they have known about my weight problem, and I have asked for help, but to no avail! (I just get told to join weight watchers and the gym - we're not all on a Dr's salary!!!)
Anyhow, now I want to change things for myself, and I really hope that you will all be there to support me, and I can do the same for you. I really need help keeping on track, and motivation!
Anyhow, sorry for the life story! hehe Hope to hear from you all soon!

that's all your doctor told you? was to join WW or a gym? i'd change doctors. when i told my doctor that i'm ready to do something about my ever increasing weight, she was extremly excited. She had all these tests done to make sure nothing was wrong. took into account how picky of an eater i am and made a plan for me. honestly, if your doctor is unwilling to be supportive in your need to become healthy, it's completly wrong.
ANYWAYS!!
welcome. i'm 21 years old as well and making better decisions. i've only been here a week and i've lost two pounds with the support of these lovely ladies. can't wait to hear your progress!

Good luck in your journey. You can do this without joining anything although it may help to be able to. I am just watching what I eat and though be it slowly I am losing. I did join a gym but only because I can't stand the heat (have asthma and it gets really hot here and that bothers my breathing) so I can't go out and just walk, not to mention, have you ever tried to walk with a 2 yo in tow?? Not easy, so I joined the Y where they have child watch so I can work out, now the problem since summer hit it to get my big ole butt outta bed early enough to go while they have the child watch program (8-10 in the morn). I didn't make it Wed so I said I would go that evening when dh got home, yea right!!! I ended up having to run all sorts of other errands and didn't make it!
Anyways, my point is, it can be done without dishing out money to a program! Other ladies here are doing it and so can you! I wish you the best of luck!

Hi, Leah---
Welcome back! Your story sounds so familiar... my physician never once mentioned my weight, although she watched me balloon from 150 to 275 in record time. Every time I brought it up, she just waffled. But when I did lose 20 pounds (after seeking help/advice elsewhere), she couldn't have been more excited, and was suddenly full of suggestions. Go figure!
Have you thought about how you want to tackle this? Weight Watchers is a great program, but you can do this in any number of healthy ways. WW was probably just the first thing that popped into to your doc's mind. I'm trying moderately low-calorie myself (about 1300/day is my goal), and I use Slim-Fast's free website to log my foods, which calculates the nutritional information for me. (I'm not on their plan, but hey... I do have the shakes for breakfast often!) Others who post here use fitday.com and sparkpeople (hope I got that right) for the same purpose. As for exercising, walking has been an excellent start for me... and it's free. And support is definitely available here, as you know...
Looking forward to seeing your progress.. beginnings are so exciting!
