Hi my name is stephony and i dont need to lose 100 lbs but i felt that this would be a good forum to go to because i am very over weight for my height and didnt want to get stuck in a discussion with people who are trying to lose 5 pounds for a weekend or something.

Well i need some help on how to start this out. I am 5'2 and i weigh 210 puonds. I know my BMI says i should be 110 but i do not go by that because it does not take in factors such as differnt races having different bone masses and also muscle mass. So for me, i would like to be 160. I remember being 160 and loving it. I am 18 and abou tot go to college in 2 months and would like to go down to 180 on that time. I have lost 20 pounds in a month before but not on purpose, i was sick and didnt know i had acid reflux lol. so i had to stop eating stuff i normally ate and cut everything in half.

I really dont like diets and i want to basically cut out junk food and eat only half of what i usually eat. Also i plan on exercises everyday at home for 70 minutes a day? how long should i exercise? 90 minutes??

Also i say at home all day becaus i dont have a summer job. Please help, thanx!

Current weight 210
Two month goal 180
Finishing Goal 160

Hi Stephony,
Welcome. My name is Wendy. I'm the same way concerning following what the BMI says. For me, I just want to be healthy. I remember being about 170 and I felt really good.

Do you exercise now? If not, then I think 70 minutes a day might be a bit too much at first. They say you should gradually get into it. Just doing like 5 days a week at 30 minutes is going to make a huge difference if you haven't exercised before. Plus, don't get too concerned with the scale if you are exercising, because if you eventually exercise a lot, you could gain muscle and tone your body but still weigh the same amount or more, since muscle weighs more than fat. I worked out one summer when I was home from college and was so upset when each week at Weight Watchers the scale stayed the same, or even went up. But at the end of the summer someone took a picture of me and I looked so much thinner!

Cutting out junk food and eating less is a very good way about losing weight. It's great to do something that you can stick with, that's why so many diet plans fail, because people can't stick to them over the long haul.

I can't wait to hear how your summer goes.

Wendy

Welcome to the group Stephony! everyone here follows something different. cutting out junk food and cutting down calories is a great start. you might try going to a place like fitday.com or sparkpeople.com to keep track of your calories. as far as how much you should exercise.. are you just starting to exercise or are you usually fairly active? I personally started out at 20-30 minutes of cardio and 30-40 minutes of strength training. but everyone is different. If exercise is new to you, you might want to take it slow so you don't hurt yourself or end up not being able to follow your routine.

again- welcome to the board.. I look forward to getting to know you better :)

Hello!!

My name is Audrey and I'm a 21 year old college student. I also hate, not really hate, but don't like people who are trying to shed 5 vanity pounds. I'm a picky eater beyond belief. I'm counting calories. I know it's a diet. Not really becase I don't like any veggies and hardly any fruits, so I'm eating in proportions and not going over my limit. For exercise I do either an eliptical for an hour or a tred mill for an hour plus all the walking i do around campus. 30 pounds in two months in about 3.75 pounds a week. Most people try to aim for 2 pounds a week. which will put you 14 pounds shy of your goal. The college you're heading to, do they have a free on campus gym or "rec center"?

hey, thanx for the welcome. My school does hve a free campus gym and i will be there whenever i have free time. i wanted to get started this summer so i can have a jump start. I do not exercise at all because right now all i do is sit at home and i think that is whats making me gain weight. before school let out i was in the 190's but now im 210. i think thats partly because i do nothing. i feel that just me exercising and not really my eating, will make me lose weight. so this morining i decided to just do tae bo for 20 minutes and then an ab workout for 20 minutes. i will alternate days between tae bo and this dance cardio. the dance cardio is about 40 minutes. when i feel i can do it, i will but all three together and do it everyday. do you think just exercising will be fine becuase the problem is that im not active at all. i gaint about 6 pounds from just sitting. Im not a horrible eater, i just have an addiction to reese's peanut butter cups lol. thanx for the help

just exercising can help, but without making life choices, it will be in vain. get out for a walk and become active. there's no quick fix.

I agree with Audrey, if you're not active at all now, just exercising will help. BUT you will see better results and feel better if you incorporate some healthy eating in your lifestyle. It doesn't have to be big changes either.. watching your portions and minimizing junk food is a HUGE start!

I just noticed your screename too.. are you in St. Louis? if so, Me too :)
