I'm drinking 4-5 bottles (16.9 oz) a day. But, like you, I just started this diet/exercise thing. I know you're suppose to drink 8 glasses (8 oz each) a day. But, for us, I don't know.

Anybody else have a clue??

Hi, tosh--

Yep, the scales sometimes have a mind of their own! 11 pounds seems like a crazy amount to lose in just a few days, but you are at the beginning, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of that loss sticks with you. You seem to have a good attitude, and probably won't freak out when the scale goes back up a few pounds after this. It's a PROCESS, we keep reminding ourselves, and the number on the scale is just a (not-always-accurate) checkpoint.

As for water, I asked my nutritionist this same question a couple of months ago. I, too, had heard the weight-to-ounces recommendation. According to her, as long as you get in your 8 X 8 oz daily, you're golden. BUT going beyond that is even better, as you're perpetually flushing your system and that assists with weight loss. (As long as you're also careful about excessive sodium intake, one of my bugaboos!) On most days lately, I seem to hit around 80-96 ounces...

Good luck to you with the next weigh-ins!

Hi Tosh,

The rule of thumb I've always heard is that you should add an extra glass beyond the standard 8-a-day for each 25 pounds you are overweight. (I visit this website from time to time for some good tools/hints and a really good explanation of water's role in weight loss: http://www.inch-aweigh.com/water.html ) When your kidneys are functioning properly your liver is more freed up to metabolize fat instead of compensating for the kidneys.

Good luck and welcome!

On the topic of water: I've spoke to my physician about this recently. She recommends the 8 8oz glasses of water a day. A few more is fine but to now overdo or you can overload your kidneys and have problems. I once new someone who lost massive amounts of weight drinking large amounts of ice water. She ended up losing alot but became extremely ill and almost died. So, I'd be careful drinking it per your body weight. My kidneys hurt just thinking about drinking 1/2 my body weight in ounces. Ouch, for me that would be about about 120 ounces which would be 15 8 ouce glasses of water a day. Nearly double the recommended intake. Wow.

I have heard it before about the 1/2 oz per pound, and it's not impossible. Keep in mind that that includes water from all sources, such as fruits and vegetables (a lot of which are upwards of 80% water), soups, and even grains. I usually drink AT LEAST 1 gallon (128 oz) if not 2 gallons or more each day, and that's in addition to all the fruits, veggies and dairy I get water from. I don't worry about drinking too much, because you will know when you are. You usually will feel sick to your stomach and like you need to throw up. I'd say keep a 32 oz mug or bottle at hand ALL the time and make a habit of sipping from it often. Just 4 of those would be 128 oz of water :).

P.S. I have seen the scale drop 6-9 lbs in ONE day before, too. It generally happens when you have a lot to lose and when you go from a diet high in refined carbs, sugars, sodium and fat to a healthier one with less of all of those things. I've been on my program for 2 months now, and if I go from my regular 1800-2000 calories a day to a super low cal (1000) day of almost only fruits and veggies, I still often see drops of 3-4 lbs overnight. Granted, it usually jumps back up once I ingest more carbs, but it can happen.

Hi.
I drink 6 8 oz cups of Ice Water
I really like it
I have not been doing it that long.
I think water is better then diet soda
I believe the diet soda makes you want to eat where water fills you.
