Who here has a rule not to eat after a certain time at night. I have heard not to eat after 6:00. Would that include coffee, tea... What do you do?

I have never had a rule about that, and never will. I am the type of person who has to force myself to eat in the morning, and I may only consume 500 calories by 5:00 p.m., and the rest of them afterwards, even up until midnight, which is when I usually go to bed. Lots of studies have been done that show it doesn't matter WHEN you it, it's HOW MUCH total you eat for the day. So, if you are the type who always binges at night, then restricting your evening eating could be beneficial. But, for me it's never been a problem, and if I try to eat more in the morning and afternoon, I still eat just as much at night, so I end up eating more and it backfires.

I don't know... I've heard 8pm, but it should probably depend on what time you go to bed, and what your schedule is. Our bodies don't metabolize food as well when we're sleeping than when we're awake and more active. I think if the bulk of our calories are eaten at night, they have more of a chance to just sit there instead of working for us.

Going hungry, though, is not a good way to lose weight either, I believe. For me, anyway, it just creates a sense of deprivation, and I'm more likely to give in to cravings thinking "I've been good all day, one chocolate bar won't hurt me." I had to find a plan that lets me eat yummy food, not go hungry, and feel satisfied at the end of the day. It's only been a week, but so far it seems to be working and I'm actually eager to keep going.

Probably the best thing to do is talk to your doctor, and see what he/she says. My GP is also a nutritionist, and she suggested not to eat the bulk of my food late at night. Not a hard "cut off at 8pm," but eating most of my calories during the day when they can do me some good.

I didn't hear the 6:00 pm rule, but I heard not to eat 2 hours before your bedtime. But that doesn't include water, tea, etc.. only includes food/beverages with calories. I am not sure if it works or not.. myself I've never been a late night eater.. I usually eat very light after 8 pm if I eat at all.. the bulk of my food comes between 5-8 pm.

I think everybody is different when it comes to weight loss.. and it is very difficult to set one set of rules for everybody. You just need to try and see what works for you. Try the not eating after 6 pm for a week (or a few days) and see if it makes a difference.

Yeah, no can do, here. We usually don't eat dinner until 6:30 or 7:00. I know it is late, but it is more important that we eat dinner as a family. My husband usually is not home from work until about 6ish. However, I am trying not to snack anymore at night, just drinking water. Hopefully, it is all doing something. I guess it is, looking at my current weight loss.

We usually do not eat after dinner, or 8:00 if I absolutley have to have something. We don;t have dinner until about 6:30 or 7. This was really hard for me to follow because I am the kind of person who wants a whole big meal at 10 p.m. Also- I used to hate eating breakfast. I have found though that going to bed kind of hungry, has made me be able to stomach breakfast a lot eaiser. Plus we go to the gym before we eat anything in the morning- so after being up about 45 minutes-my body can take the food :)

My fiance gets home at 7:30, and we prefer to eat dinner together so I asked my doctor about this "rule." She said that while not optimal for good digestion, it isn't as if that food will automatically be put on as fat. Also, if you go to bed later, then eating later is ok, for instance, people who eat at 5 may go to bed at 9, I eat at 8 and go to bed at 12, same time difference.

Hope this helps.

No 6 o'clock rule for me either.. it goes so much against my natural grain that it would be doomed to failure immediately.

Oh, and my impression is that this rule only includes caloric things, so coffee and tea (no sugar or cream) probably doesn't count.

well i know that, being a college student, i'm on campus from 8-5 every day. and i can only eat what i bring (it's usually not much because i'm usually running late). so when i get home from campus i'm starving. 6:00 is a no go for me. i try not to eat after 8 but.. that never really works out.
