I'm new to the whole dieting thing, and I'm discovering it's really hard out here. I'm only 25 so it should be easy to lose weight. However, I live on an island of less that 1000 people, that has 26 bars and no gym. The only exercise I get is when I'm surfing or walking the dog. I'm trying a low calorie diet, and that's not the hard part, I don't have a problem depriving myself, just getting up and exercising. Any tips for motivation, or things you can do at home?

Welcome to the board! (And when would you like me to come and be your personal coach on the Island of 26 Bars, LOL? )
Surfing (if I remember correctly from high school days) and walking the dog are both good exercise! Can you also get some tapes/DVDs to do at home? These run the gamut from walking to pilates to cardio to bellydancing, etc., something for every taste and skill level. The trick is to find one (or more) that intrigue you enough to actually DO the darn things... Another often-overlooked possibility is just dancing like a fiend to your favorite music, either in the privacy of your own home or (if you're much braver that me) in any or all of the 26 bars.
You'll find that this board is a great source of support, and ideas... hope to hear from you as you move forward.

Welcome to the board! Congrats on being ready to make the changes in your life and this board is wonderful :).
If you are looking for good at home exercises, then walking is the best exercise there is! I've lost 31 lbs in 11 weeks by watching my calories (I eat 1800 per day, so not too bad) and exercise, mostly walking. I've walked almost 80 miles this month alone! If you can find an area that has hills or sand, you will get an extra boost in calorie burn from the extra effort it requires. If you need something you can do in your home, you might buy an exercise bike, I found mine for $80 at Walmart. It's obviously not top of the line, but it works when I need it to.
Good luck and I hope to see you around!

Welcome to the board.
Welcome to the board!
As already mentioned, walking is a great exercise on it's own.. I know what you mean about exercise motivation problems.. have the same issue here.. but I've been forcing myself lately to exercise and I'm hoping it becomes a habit. I think if you stick with something long enough it becomes a habit.. at least it's what I've been telling myself. We'll be doing a couple of challenges this month if you'd like to join.. there's the official September challenge and I'm doing a side exercise challenge.. the exercise challenge helped me last month and I'm hoping it will do the same this month too.. please feel free to join either or both :)
Again welcome to the board and good luck on your journey.. post as often as you like.. it's a pretty friendly and supportive group here

Hi There - I just wanted to welcome you to the board. My name is Jena. I am 30 yrs old and it has been a real challenge for me to lose weight. I have a couple of things that I work at home with even though I belong to a gym. There is an ab roller that you can get a Walmart. It's about $20.00 and it seems to work pretty good. If you don't have a walmart on the island you can probably go to www.walmart.com and get one there. Also, look up www.sportsauthority.com and I'm sure they have several products you can use like hand held weights, etc... Hope this helps and I look forward to getting to know you better!
