Hi my name is Valerie I am 36 and sadly fall in the 100 to lose category. I have really bad knees' obviously from carrying so much weight around. My dr. says they will feel better once I lose some weight. But it's hard to do when your activity is limited, I always feel like I am starving on diets. Today I signed up for the fitday.com food diary and I want to try and limit my bad calories, without having the feeling that I am starving! LOL any advice would be helpful.

Welcome Valerie! I started trying to lose weight at the beginning of July and my knees--especially my left one--ached every morning. After a couple of weeks of walking the treadmill they stopped bothering me all together. I had been using them as an excuse not to exercise, and once I got started I couldn't get over the difference. I track every day on FitDay and find it really easy to use. After you've been recording data for a while you can generate really cool reports that help you see trends in your activities, weight loss, and diet. (For example, I hadn't realized how much sodium was in my diet until I started tracking it as a nutritional goal.) One of the things that works for me to keep from feeling ravenous is to have healthy snacks like carrots and celery in the fridge and ready to grab. I also find that if I have a glass of water and do something else for a while I can ignore my cravings. Good luck! I look forward to seeing you on the board. Annie

I would say try to eat less carbs. Cause I think carbs are very bad. Esp. heavy rolls or heavy bagels. I also try chewing gum when being craved to eat.

Welcome aboard, and good luck to you. I am like you in the limited exercise and feeling like starving on diets, so I just try to keep my calories and fat levels down to normal values which you can use Ivillages health calculator to find for you and it may be slow but I have lost 10 lbs since May maybe. I don't remember but I go off track and get back on and go off and get back on. That is the key, just don't give up. If you go off track get back on asap. It is very hard to stay with it, but you can do it. Like I said I have lost 10 lbs and pretty much kept off despite struggling more than not struggling. I may gain 3 or 4 lbs but most of it is water weight and comes right back off once I get back to drinking water. Good luck.

Hi Valerie and welcome to the board. I use fitday myself.. I track every bite that goes inside my mouth.. I find it very helpful. When you start to decrease the volume of food you eat, you'll obviously feel hungry.. the trick is to find food with large volume but low in calorie. Like the 94% popcorn.. there are 100 calorie packs for those and it's a lot of food. Drinking plenty of water also helps. Vegetables in general are low in calorie but fill you up real nice. Stock up with health food that you can snack on. You can have a look at the journals below and get ideas from there.

Good luck on your journey.. looking forward to knowing you better

HI Valerie! Just wanted to say welcome to our board. The key for me is to eat six mini-meals a day with a carb and a protein at every meal). Check out my journal and you'll see how a typical day goes for me (when I'm on track). I also cut out all refined carbs. For example instead of white rice, I eat brown rice. I eat whole grains (whole grain bread, pasta, etc..) I cut out all the white stuff. I also think the key for me has been that once I binge just to get back on track immediately. Hope this helps and I look forward to getting to know you better on the board.

Take Care, Jena

Welcome to the board, Valerie! I've heard a lot of good things about Fitday.com. If you like fruits and veggies, you could fix up ready made servings of them to have around for quickie snacks. If you have the healthy stuff handy, you can fill up on that whenever the munchies hit. That way you're getting in your daily servings and not starving.

Hello, Valerie--

I can totally empathize with your bad knees; that was probably the most noticable weight-related problem for me, and the one that finally convinced me I'd better do something before I lost my mobility completely!

The good news is that even a small weight loss made a really pronounced improvement in the way my knees felt. And that in turn made it easier to exercise, which made it easier to lose weight, which helped my knees even more, etc. Last month I went on a week-long hiking tour, something that six months ago I could never have done! It is really worth the effort. I've also found that when I take in less sodium, my knees feel better. Don't know if it's the water-weight, or some other alchemy, but whatever the reason, I'll take it.

As for "starving", it might take some time to adjust. Eating lots of healthy fiber and some (not too much) fat helps me feel less empty... and WATER. Best of lucj to you!
